La Souabe est une des régions les plus poétiques de l'Allemagne. Contiguë à la Suisse par sa frontière méridionale, ses sites la reproduisent en miniature. Les torrents de ses vallées n'étourdissent point le laboureur. Dans la belle saison, leur courant diaphane voile à peine le sol; ils gémissent doucement contre les roches anguleuses qui gênent leur marche, et leur voix mélancolique résonne à travers les forêts, comme le chant d'un orgue lointain. Les basses terres et pentes vineuses sont les seuls endroits que l'on cultive. Les hauteurs ont gardé leur physionomie originelle, et cette nature sauvage, formant contraste avec une nature moins rude, oppose les harmonies du désert aux grâces de la civilisation. Dans la plaine, des chaumières fumantes, des blés ondoyants, un villageois qui bêche et fredonne quelque antique ballade; sur la montagne, le cri du lammergeier, et les pointes granitiques dressées au milieu des arbres, comme un pic au milieu des flots. Une tour presque détruite charge ordinairement leur cime. Par ses croisées béantes, on aperçoit vers le midi une longue chaîne de glaciers. Leur éternelle pâleur rehausse les noirs sommets qui les précèdent, et, comme l'idée de la mort dans les festins antiques, augmente le charme du tableau déployé devant vous. Plusieurs fois j'ai vu l'orage envelopper le Schwartzwald et redoubler la nuit de ses forêts. Le tonnerre planait sur elles, ainsi qu'un envoyé du Seigneur en courroux. Mais tandis que le vent remuait les pins et fouettait les nuages, les éblouissants pitons de la Suisse conservaient toute leur sérénité. A leur inaltérable magnificence on eût dit une rangée de blanches déesses attirées par cette lugubre fêle...
