In 1925, philosopher Alfred North Whitehead presented a series of eight lectures, delivering a groundbreaking exploration of the cultural and philosophical implications of scientific progress from the classical civilizations of the ancient world to the nineteenth century. One of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, Whitehead posits philosophy as a critical interpreter, illuminating science's hidden assumptions and bridging the gap between scientific findings and the evolving human experience. The lectures examined how scientific discoveries reshaped our perception of the physical world and redefined how we understand our place in the universe. Whitehead's insightful commentary remains a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue between science and the humanities and prompts a holistic worldview, reflecting the interconnectedness of all aspects of existence. It is an essential read for those interested in the philosophy of science.

2024 Reprint of the 1925 Edition. Originally published in 1925, Alfred North Whitehead's Science and the Modern World was a groundbreaking and important book that redefined the concept of modern science. In emphasizing the position of science as a culturally connected activity, Whitehead anticipated arguments that would come to dominate the philosophy of science in the latter part of the twentieth century. Highly measured in its approach, the text moves through various periods in cultural history from the sixteenth century onwards and shows how the great scientific discoveries of these periods were intimately connected with a more general intellectual ferment. Throughout this narrative, philosophy is put forward as humanity's fundamental intellectual pursuit; a medium of change and reconfiguration from which all thought, scientific included, derives its strength.

2024 Reprint of the 1926 Edition. Whitehead was a prominent English mathematician and philosopher who co-authored the highly influential Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell. Religion in the Making, which originated in a series of four lectures delivered in King's Chapel, Boston, during February 1926, constitutes an exploration of the relationship between human nature and religion. In many ways a rejection of dogma, the text explores the connection between religious transformation and the transformation of knowledge. Through this approach, the reader is encouraged to develop a conception of faith that is at home with the changing nature of experience. The permanent aspect of religion is regarded as the apprehension of permanent elements that are reconcilable with this form of change. This concise and fascinating study will be of value to anyone with an interest in philosophy and theology.

  • - The Tarner Lectures Delivered in Trinity College November 1919
    af Alfred North Whitehead
    133,95 - 158,95 kr.

This book from 1920 consists of the Tarner Lectures in the philosophy of science and features Whitehead's assessment of the impact of Einstein's theories on nature. He argues for taking events and the process of becoming as the starting points for analyzing reality. Whitehead criticizes the idea of nature as a mere aggregate of independent entities, each capable of isolation. According to this idea, by their accidental relations entities form the system of nature. In this theory space might exist without time, and time without space. The relational theory of space is an admission that space without matter or matter without space cannot exist. Our knowledge of nature is an experience of activity or passage. Events are active entities; their relations with one another differentiate into space-relations and time-relations. But this differentiation is comparatively superficial, since time and space are each partial expressions of one fundamental relation between events, which is neither spatial not temporal. Whitehead calls this relation Extension: it is the relation of including and does not require spatio-temporal differentiation. An integral addition to any New Thought library and a great insight into the theories of nature and the universe. Cover photography by Paul Spremulli.
