Man sagt, daß Steine nicht reden können. Blumen stumm sind. Baum und Sträucher nichts sagen. Ich glaube das nicht. Wer sommertags vom Staub der Landstraße durch das schmiedeiserne Gitter auf die weiten Rasenflächen sah, wo ich meine ersten Tage vertummelte, mußte denken, daß man es hier gut hatte. Hier im grünen Schatten kühlatmender Stille. Schmale Wege durchschnitten den samtnen Grasteppich. Jeden Morgen frisch geharkt, befreit von jedem spitzen Stein. Umrahmt von Blumen und Gesträuch. Die nicht der wehende Wind aus Laune oder Zufall dorthin gebracht. Sie waren von Rang und hohem Geblüt. Trugen ihre Visitenkarte im Knopfloch ihres Blütenrocks. Mit Unbekannten verkehrte man hier nicht. Alle diese Wege, einen Stern in den Erdboden schneidend, führten zu einem weißen Haus. Mondkühl silberte es aus dunklem Grün. Am heißen Mittag wie vor Sonnenaufgang. Seine Schattenseite umrankten Rosen. Neben dem großen Portal standen blühende Oleander in Reih und Glied wie Soldaten. Vorübergehende nannten dies Haus: Die Schachtel der Geborgenheit. Wer es nicht wußte, konnte von einem kleinen Kupferschild ablesen, daß hier Senator Eberhaus wohnte. Ein andres Schild gab kund, daß man hier Mitglied des Armenvereins war. Es ersuchte Bettler, sich nicht unnütz zu bemühen und warnte vor den Hunden. Diese Hunde waren meine Mutter und ich. Meine Mutter hieß Lonni. Sie stammte aus dem Geschlecht der Dobermann. Ihr Stammbaum hing eingerahmt im Jagdzimmer des Herrn Senators. Es gab niemanden in ihrer Familie, der nicht öffentliche Auszeichnungen aufzuweisen hatte. Auch meine Mutter selbst trug mehrere Med

Josef Blümel, der Herr Kanzleioffizial, wäre Wiener gewesen, gleichviel ob er in Paris, London oder Berlin auf die Welt gekommen, ob er auf Haiti, Sumatra hätte leben müssen, auf dem Mars oder auf dem Grund des Meeres. Eilige Schritte waren Herrn Blümel verabscheuungswert. Schnell sprechen hätte er gar nicht fertiggebracht. Verdrießlichkeiten galten als persönliche Beleidigung. Das Kaffeehaus brauchte er, wie der Donaukarpfen die Donau. Ebensowenig hätte der Herr Kanzleioffizial Musik entbehren können, wenn sich nach Schluß der Bureaustunden graues Unbehagen heranzuschleichen sucht, selbst an achtbare Beamte, alleinstehend und zu keinerlei Verschwendung geneigt. Kein Tingeltangelgeklapper, sondern die heiteren, heimatlichen Erzeugnisse eigener Landsleute, wie Mozart, Schubert, Strauß. Man war vertraut mit ihnen in allen Eigenarten, genau so wie mit Trambahngeklingel, Autogeschrei, Hustengepolter, Weibergeschwätz. Nur daß sie einem erheblich angenehmer waren. Trotzdem war der Herr Kanzleioffizial aufregenden Neuigkeiten, Absonderlichkeiten und überhaupt jeder Art merkwürdiger Zwischenfälle des Lebens durchaus nicht abgeneigt. Er brachte ihnen Interesse entgegen, beinahe Gefallen. Nur mußten sie anderen geschehen sein. Gesprächsweise jedoch, auch durch Druckerschwärze in Buch oder Zeitung vermittelt, war er zu jedem Miterleben bereit.
