New York City-based author Allison Conway brings us a series of slice-of-life comics about being a young woman in a modern, ever-changing world. It's summer. The wildlife, down to the tiniest creature, is thriving. Millie, a pillbug, and her group of friends: Alfie - a ladybug; Ellie - a dragonfly; Holly - a spider; and Ruby - an ant, go about their daily lives. Millie feels like a bug apart. Unlike her friends, Millie needs to stay moist all the time, she doesn't pee like her friends, and she's the only vegetarian! Absorbed with her own concerns, she's unable to recognize that her friends have problems, too. Eventually, with the support of her friends, she learns that she is a crustacean, not a bug, and she begins to see that her friends have their own fears and vulnerabilities. The bug world is often harsh. With humor, delight, and a little horror, Millie and her friends provide insights into nature, bug and human, as they try to make the most of their short lives, care for one another, and share a nice cup of tea.
This "silent" graphic novel follows a nameless subject trapped in a nightmarish test facility, raising unsettling questions of exploitation and oppression. The Lab is a wordless visual journey into the grim machinery of exploitation. Its nameless protagonist is held in solitary captivity, alternately poked, prodded, starved, drugged, and worse. Brief glimpses of other test subjects, undergoing their own ordeals, are few and far between. But is all this abuse and isolation purely arbitrary? Or is there a purpose?Painstakingly and evocatively rendered, Allison Conway's debut graphic novel explores the spectrum between lifeless gray and vivid color. It asks uncomfortable questions about the treatment we tolerate and the injustices underlying our modern world.
