Tartarin er en storpralhalende provencaler- lidt som en moderne Don Quiote - han drager ud på en vanskelig ekspedition, bl. a. til Nordafrika og vender hjem som en stor helt, skønt han lidet har udrettet.Alphonse Daudet var en skarp iagttager af sin samtid, med åbent blik for alle virkelighedens tragikomiske detaljer.
