As a church historian I'll always enjoy the time I spend on ministers or churches when I am doing research on them. One of my neighbors, has a name that in with Haning, and in our discussion I learned he was from Southeast Ohio where much of the early Free Will Baptist work was established. In our conversation I told him that a minister whose name was Ira Haning encouraged to one of his deacons by the name of Nehemiah Atwood to fund the beginning of Rio Grande College in 1876.I began to research his name and found out that he was actually kin to the minister and two other early Free Will Baptist standouts, namely David Dudley an early church planter, and Joseph Mauck who became president of Hillsdale College in Michigan. This was at the beginning of what would be days and weeks researching other early Free Will Baptist ministers in Ohio. What an interesting work this was as I began to get more acquainted with those who established the foundation of the work in Ohio. May I remind you the state of Ohio was a wilderness when these churches were being built and hardship was ever present. Thus a book of genealogies and information was born. I could not take what I have absorbed without sharing this information so others will know what I have learned. Please enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed learning about so many that are contained herein.
Good preaching makes good reading And Good reading develops good preaching.Ohio has great preachers and their messages can help others as God inspires another for his preaching. There is no substitute for God anointed study of His word and the thoughts of others to germinate in the minds of others.May this series do this for you.
Two of the earliest Free Baptist ministers and writers that wrote on the subject of the Freedom of the Will were Enoch Mack, M.D. and Dr. Ransom Dunn.Mack in 1833 signed the Declaration of Sentiments put forth by the Anti-Slavery Society movement and became attracted to the Free Baptists because of their anti-slavery sentiments and became an early contributor to the Morning Star. In 1835 William Burr suggested he move to Dover, New Hampshire where he became the pastor of the First Free Will church. He later became the Corresponding Secretary of the Foreign and Home Mission Societies but still was an editorial contributor of the Morning Star.Dunn, was also an early pastor in Dover at the Washington Ave. Free Baptist Church which still remains today as the Dover Baptist Church. He was known for his leadership as an educator at Rio Grande College and Geauga Seminary both in Ohio and Hillsdale College in Michigan. He was an excellent speaker and notable writer. Both contributed to the Freedom of the Will in this book as separate writings.
One of the most important families in the Free Will Baptist movement in the north serving in the Randall branch. There were numerous ministers and leaders in the Marks family. An interesting read.
Many clergymen have made great inroads in the shaping of the American society. Some as great orators, some as great theologians, some as great writers. Some influenced the founding of denominations and others as educators.Such of these in this book.Of course, many are not listed who did some of these listed above, but their locations of burial could not be found. Or some died overseas doing ministry. These represent those who have died after leaving their mark and there are those still leaving theirs today. They are not listed herein.
A ministry to be fulfilled. The love of a couple that drove them to a distance land to help the poor and underprivileged. It is a story of suspense and dedication of displaced people from many lands. It a true love story of a man who followed the woman to a field she felt called. Because his love for was such he would do anything to stay near her. Filled with love, tears, intrigue, and the life of those where help had to come to them for them to have any hope.
