On a warm Indian summer day, a newly appointed canine unit conservation officer gets a tipoff that someone built a tree hut for hunting in Painted Turtle nature reserve. Eager to help his colleague and familiar with Foxton's extensive forests, Adam heads into the reserve from the west, leaving the other officer, Sam, and her dog, Wilson, to enter from the east.Instead of a tree hut, Adam stumbles upon a man dressed in an office suit in the middle of the forest. Believing the man is dead, he calls the police, but when they arrive the man has disappeared and the search is fruitless. At his wits' end, Adam calls upon Maggie to help him make sense of what he saw. Not only does Maggie find evidence that he wasn't hallucinating, but they, together with Sam and Wilson, also discover the tree hut...which leads them to a far bigger illegal operation than could ever be expected in sleepy Foxton. If that's not enough, Maggie finds a body and witnesses another death... How will she cope with it this time?
Summer in the little village of Foxton by the lake isn't only about regattas, barbecues, and romance, as Maggie Flanagan finds out when she has an absurd boating accident. Little does she know that retrieving a mysterious parcel from the lake will implicate her in the discovery of a body in a boat. Eager to help Adam, her secret sweetheart, untangle his godfather's involvement in the affair, Maggie unleashes her terrier instinct once again…Along the way, Maggie gets precious help from her best friend Amy while having to contend with Tina, the headstrong journalist, and her views on who may be behind it all. Will Maggie's instincts steer her in the right direction this time?
