Lazarus County has yet to be tamed. There's drought, bandits, and natives to contend with. People have moved out there hoping to better themselves, have a chance at the kind of life they could never hope for back East.The town of Gilgamesh, the county seat, offers plenty of people second chances. One of those people is Dr. Abel Winston.Abel arrives in Gilgamesh on the very first train. A newly qualified doctor, fresh from university, he is excited about his new life, and hopes that New Mexico will provide him with new challenges and ways to use his knowledge than a 'dull' job in a hospital back in Boston. However, he finds a small town, with small town medical needs. He thinks about leaving, until he sees an advertisement in the brand new local newspaper The Gilgamesh Herald requesting help on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Disease has become rife, and the missions have long gone.The advertisement is placed by Jeannette Reynolds, the Mayor's niece. Expecting the danger and warlike nature of the Arizona Apache, Abel is again let down by their peaceful way of living - but the work is challenging and it means he gets to spend time with Jeanette. At first, he finds her too bold, too brash and very unfeminine. But, the more they work together, he sees her in a new light, and begins to fall for her. However, her parents want her to marry the son of another newspaper owning family, to expand their empire.
