Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, , language: English, abstract: It is not easy to write about the development of Food Anthropology over the past half century and its contribution to the understanding of human society and culture around the world. Yet, it is honoured to have Ellen Messer (1984), Jon D. Holtzman (2006) and Lynne Phillips (2006) published articles in the Annual Review of Anthropology. With the themes of diets, food and eating, globalization and memory, they concisely reviewed the development and significance of food anthropology at different times and its importance of interpreting social culture, as well as explored the mutual relationship between global and regional food culture. The development of food culture spans hundreds of years and spreads around the world, expanding our horizons and repositioning the problem of global integration. In view of this for the review of Food Anthropology, this proposal will only introduce some of the more representative theories and situation after the Second World War. In addition, food culture in Hong Kong¿s community will be used as a case study, in order to provide an understanding of the food culture change in Southern China and its social significance.
Essay from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, , language: English, abstract: "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan portrays four Chinese women who migrated from China to the United States, still filled with the pain of the past and traditional Chinese culture. The interlocked stories in the book follow the development of the influence of the women's experience on their respective daughters, who are born in the United States. Due to some traumatic experiences, the mothers could not and cannot freely and independently live their lives, so in the United States, where equality between male and female can be found, they put all their hopes on their daughters, hoping that they can be crafted into bright persons in the future under their mothers¿ nursing. The daughters are thus to shine and thrive in the booming country, rather unlike the ancient Chinese women, who must be subservient to men.

Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The oppressions that different classes and ethnic groups face are linked to a greater institutional issue. ¿Overly long working hours exploits the time of Hong Kong adults to cook, to shop, to take care of their children and elderlies¿ (Constable, 2005). Many workers are thrown into the labour force in order to earn an income to support their families, in which they sacrifice the time to spend with each other (the basic family reunion) and the the to take care of the family. ¿Comparing with the importation of labour, the cost of offering free childcare and services for the elderly is much higher. It would have been the responsibility of the government, but the importation of foreign domestic helpers help the government to escape from the obligation in a certain extent. The government lays the responsibility of nursing and caring problems back to the families themselves and regards these out of its responsibility. This is seen as a solution that is similar to neo-liberalism.In this paper, it is going to analyse how the ethnic minorities contend against the institutionalised racism they face in daily life, by using the movement where the Philippine domestic migrant workers fight for their rights and justice as an example. What¿s more, it also investigates the relationship between liberalism and polyethnic rights by stating and reviewing Will Kymlickäs Liberal Multiculturalism.
