Por entonces integró el grupo de hombres que inició y promovió los movimientos independentistas en Venezuela. Bello intentó racionalizar y construir con este Resumen de la historia de Venezuela un manual para entender los desmanes del gobierno español.

El Resumen de la historia de Venezuela, escrito por Andrés Bello, está incluido en la obra del mismo autor El Calendario manual y guía universal de forasteros en Venezuela para el año de 1810, con superior permiso. Es la prosa más importante que conocemos del humanista, antes de partir de Caracas, en la cual se manifiesta con propio estilo y anticipa los temas de su mejor poesía, las Silvas, que escribirá en Londres.
El lugar que su sistema en general y tantos puntos particulares dan a la Filosofía del entendimiento, condicionando su valía, es desde luego excepcional en la historia del pensamiento de lengua española, pero incluso no ínfimo en la universal de la filosofía. Porque en la historia del pensamiento de lengua española, la Filosofía del entendimiento representa la manifestación más importante de la filosofía hispanoamericana influida por la europea anterior al idealismo alemán y contemporánea de ésta hasta la positivista -puedo ratificar el juicio- y por lo mismo un hito de relieve singular en la historia entera de dicho pensamiento.Si en los pueblos de lengua española cultivásemos nuestros clásicos como debiéramos, aunque no fuesen comparables con los clásicos de otros pueblos, en las clases de filosofía deberíamos preferir a cualquier traducción numerosos pasajes de Bello para ilustrar las exposiciones o practicar el comentario de textos. Que esta edición mueva a ello y sirva para ello.
