Wells discusses how literacy affects human cognition from an ecological functionalism viewpoint by using the Turing machine, specifically the universal machine, as a model for the human mind. Ecological functionalism is based on Turing's fundamental insights and extends them by drawing on contemporary theories of concurrent and distributed computation to cover a wide range of psychological domains.
