The best-selling novel Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell, was first published in 1877. Years ahead of its time, the story is a first-person narrative told from the perspective of the horse Black Beauty. This unique point of view enables readers to empathize with the lives of working horses and to reflect upon the cruel treatment that has sometimes been inflicted upon them. As a result, this beautifully written novel serves as a strenuous and timeless statement against animal cruelty and exploitation.

Published in 1877, Black Beauty is a story of a horse narrated in first person as an autobiographical memoir. The author Anna Sewell was inspired by the life of horses as she travelled a great deal on the horse driven carriages after she had a bad fall that injured both her ankles and left her disabled for the rest of her life. The novel follows the entire life of a horse named 'Black Beauty' ? right from his carefree days as a colt on an English farm with his mother, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London to his happy retirement in the country. While taking us through this journey of the horse?s life, Sewell subtly brings out lessons typically related to the kindness, sympathy, and understanding the treatment of horses. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but having lived long enough to see her only novel become a success. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. Embassy Books proudly presents this book as part of the Embassy Classics Series, which comprises of some of the finest literary works of great authors.
English novelist Anna Sewell published her book Black Beauty in 1877.The novel is written in the first person by the eponymous horse Black Beauty as an autobiographical biography, starting with his carefree days as a foal on an English farm with his mother, through his challenging time pulling taxis in London, and ending with his content retirement in the country. He encounters several challenges along the journey and tells many tales of brutality and generosity. Each brief chapter tells an event in Black Beauty's life that has a lesson or moral that is often connected to treating horses with love, sympathy, and understanding. Sewell's in-depth observations and exhaustive descriptions of horse behavior give the book a lot of realism.
