Den verdenskendte og elskede forfatterinde, Astrid Lindgren, blev født i Småland i Sverige i 1907. Blandt hendes mest kendte værker, hører fortællingerne om Pippi Langstrømpe, Brødrene Løvehjerte og Ronja Røverdatter. Inspireret af sin far, som Lindgren selv beskriver som en stor fortæller, helligede hun sig i en tidlig alder til historiefortællingen. I 1944 udgav hun sin første bog "Britt-Mari lätter sitt hjärta", der gav hende andenpladsen i en børnebogskonkurrence. Efterfølgende blev det til en masse udgivelser af stor betydning i børnebogsverdenen. Astrid Lindgren fandt oftest inspiration i sin egen opvækst i Småland, hvorfra naturen og miljøet optræder i mange af hendes bøger. Hun har sat sit præg i litteraturens verden, med alt fra detektivhistorier til idylliske historier og historier om ensomme børn. Derudover har hun udgivet adskillelige essays, bøger for voksne og teater- og filmmanuskripter. Astrid Lindgren havde et talent for at ramme barnets særlige humor, samtidig med at introducere det for mørke emner som sorg, ondskab og død. Det siges at hun selv formåede at beholde barnet i sig hele sit liv. Astrid Lindgren er elsket af både børn og voksne i hele verden. Hun modtog i 1958 den internationale H.C. Andersen-medalje, som også kaldes børnelitteraturens Nobelpris. Derudover er hendes bøger blevet oversat til næsten 90 sprog og solgt i over 100 millioner eksemplarer. Omkring 40 film er baseret på hendes bøger. Astrid Lindgren er en af de mest fantasifulde og folkekære børnebogsforfattere, der nogensinde har eksisteret. Udover at modtage en masse fine priser, har hun formået at røre utallige børne- og voksenhjerter igennem tiden.
