Elle fut longtemps l'intermédiaire naturel entre la Judée et le Liban, ou plutôt entre la Judée et le reste du monde, puisque la Palestine, bornée à l'occident par la Méditerranée, n'eut pendant des siècles pour proche voisin au sud et à l'est que le désert. C'est par le nord que les Juifs étaient en contact direct avec d'autres nationalités. On peut dire de la Galilée qu'elle était pour eux une porte toujours ouverte sur le monde extérieur, chose suspecte et déplaisante aux vrais Orientaux. Du nord au sud, la nature varie dans la terre de Canaan. Les collines galiléennes n'ont pas les gorges profondes du Liban, où quelque courant d'eau s'est creusé un lit tapissé d'une végétation exubérante; mais elles ont à leur pied et dans leurs flancs des bassins ou plateaux de verdure inconnus dans le midi. On a comparé ces collines à des racines que le mont Hermon, comme un grand et vieux chêne, pousserait au loin vers l'ouest et la mer. Moins riches que le Liban, elles sont cependant bien moins arides et pierreuses que la Judée...
