Edmond François Valentin About (1828/1885) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Aus dem Buch - Vorbemerkung des Übersetzers: "... Ein italienischer Flüchtling, der 1848 und 1849 in Rom als Republikaner gegen den Papst und die Franzosen kämpfte, erscheint hier als Liebhaber auf der Bühne; sein Grafentitel ist, wie auch sonst jetzt zuweilen in Italien, nur ein angenehmer Schmuck. Die Scene der Novelle ist anfänglich und zum Schluß in Paris, zwischendurch in der Schweiz und der Hauptakt spielt auf deutschem Boden: in Baden-Baden, dem einzigen deutschen Orte, wohin der elegante und üppige Pariser sich damals mit Vorliebe wandte, um in dem halb von Franzosen bevölkerten Städtchen Sommervergnügungen in einer internationalen Halbwelt zu genießen und vornehmlich dem in Frankreich verbotenen Hasardspiel zu frönen, das hier erst 1872 durch Aufhebung der Spielbank sein Ende fand..."
