After years living in Texas, Ben Snakepit and his wife are excited to move to San Francisco and start a whole new adventure together. However, as the reality of the pandemic bears down only a month after their arrival, this next chapter in their lives turns out to be different than expected. Told in lo-fi daily diary comics spanning 2019-2021, Snakepit chronicles the challenges of living in lockdown, learning a new city under strange circumstances, and making the best of it.
Spanning from 2003 until 2020, Snakepit covers DIY punk life, from show reviews and scene reports, to the basics of touring on the cheap and making friends on the road, to falling in love and eating pizza he found face-down on the street. With retrospective footnotes from the artist, this collection shows the growth and change of one punk's perspective.
Manor Threat contains three more years of daily diary comics from Ben Snakepit. This episode brings us to the town of Manor (pronounced "MAY-ner"), a suburb of Austin, Texas. Ben buys a house with his wife and adjusts to slow-paced country living. He also turns 40 and gets a new job, and then gets another job. Along the way, he draws a three-panel comic describing each day's events, however dramatic or monotonous. Against that steady march of time, patterns emerge and shift and the result is a meditative, addictive read that captures the humanity of everyday life. Bonus for true fans: A surprise ending!
