El 19 de Marzo y el 2 de Mayo es la tercera novela de la primera serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. Continúa con la historia del joven gaditano Gabriel de Araceli, quien es también protagonista de los dos anteriores episodios, La Corte de Carlos IV y Trafalgar. La vida de Gabriel transcurre entre idas y venidas de la capital a Aranjuez, donde su novia Inés, huérfana, vive recogida por su tío, párroco de Aranjuez y protegido del Primer Ministro Manuel de Godoy, de quien dice ser paisano y amigo.
La historia se desarrolla en Cataluña en el año 1827. Cuenta la infancia de un nuevo personaje, Pepet Argensola, y de como, a pesar de ser educado para ser capellán, acaba convirtiéndose en uno de los instigadores y más notables comandantes de la revuelta catalana conocida como Guerra de los Agraviados o de los Malcontents.
Primera novela de Benito Pérez Galdós, es publicada en 1870. La acción transcurre en la ciudad de Madrid durante los años del Trienio Constitucional y toma su título del café situado cerca de la Puerta del Sol que, con ese mismo nombre, sirvió de lugar de reunión a artistas y tribuna oratoria para políticos liberales.En la novela, se mezclan los hechos históricos con los asuntos personales siguiendo una pauta de construcción literaria similar a la de los Episodios Nacionales.

Galdós critica los defectos de un catolicismo aparente; pone de relieve la verdadera indiferencia, que, a su juicio, se oculta en España tras la pantalla de un catolicismo más supuesto que real.

Presentada como novela en cinco jornadas y ambientada en la Barcelona del último tercio del siglo XIX, su publicación a finales del año 1892 casi pasó inadvertida, prestando el público de Galdós más atención a su estreno teatral en los primeros días de 1893. La esencia de la historia puede resumirse en el juicio que expresó Leopoldo Alas Clarín, comparándola con Ángel Guerra, como historia de "la fiera amansada por el amor" (siendo la fiera el rudo y activo "Pepet" y la artífice del milagro amoroso, Victoria, la loca de la casa); en palabras del crítico, escritor y amigo de Galdós, Victoria "joven mística, en el sentido vulgar y corriente de la palabra, emprende la conquista de un alma rebelde y fuerte, como el cristianismo emprendió la conquista de los bárbaros". De la amplia producción novelesca de Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), la crítica ha destacado en numerosas ocasiones La de Bringas (1884) como su mejor libro. La historia, centrada en Madrid, empieza siendo el retrato de una mujer que tenía esa vanidad que pretende cubrir con perifollos de seda la falta de ropa blanca y que prefiere el adorno de la sala al cuidado de la alcoba, para concluir como una novela sobre la ambición y el poder en una sociedad basada en el fraude y el engaño.
