Ein zum Druck vorgesehenes Manuskript des Autors im Umfang von 2000 Seiten hat sich leider nicht erhalten.Berthold Laufer (1874-1934), Kaufmannssohn aus Köln, war einer der bedeutendsten Orientalisten. Nach dem Studium an der Berliner Universität (Chinesisch, Mandschu, Mongolisch, Tibetisch) unternahm er mehrjährige Forschungsreisen in Ostasien und wurde schließlich, dank der Unterstützung durch den bedeutenden Ethnologen Franz Boas Kurator am Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, wo er bis zu seinem Tode tätig war. Er veröffentlichte etwa 450 wissenschaftliche Arbeiten, die durch ihre kritische Methode und ihre quellenmäßige Dokumentation ebenso wie durch weiten thematischen Umfang, den vielfach interdisziplinären Ansatz sowie die engen Bezüge zur materiellen Kultur bestechen.Der zweite Beitrag wurde durch Laufers Arbeit angeregt; er konzentriert sich auf die Flora sinensis des Jesuiten Michael Boym (1612-1659), ein koloriertes Prachtwerk von 1656, in dem eine Reihe aus Amerika stammende Kulturpflanzen als "chinesische" beschrieben werden.Der Autor ist Bibliothekar an der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (i. R.) sowie Privatdozent an der Freien Universität Berlin (i. R.)
