You would think it would be a lift of the spirits, two handsome men competing for your attention; One rich and reckless, the other stable and firmly grounded. Laura Noble should feel lucky, shouldn't she? It was fun when they were teenagers and two boys vied for her attention but now she's married and expecting a baby. Having somebody love you was supposed to be the end all of a girl's dreams, but when confidential and ill-gained information is used against her, she has to hang on to her faith which is never more needed than the day she is abducted and forced to walk through a snake infested swamp where she is abandoned.

Perish Small Town, U.S.A. was not only about the adults who lived there, but a handful of girls that observed more than they would ever tell, heard things no one else wanted to hear and never forgot the important things. The problem was important to whom?No one kept score of the missing people. The adults said, those reports that appeared through the year were mere fabrications. But when you are ten and eleven years old and you fear something might jump out of your closet at night, you begin to wonder are those stories true? When Lily died they were sad and unsettled, not to mention scared and they felt they had to find who was responsible. It seemed the only person knowing how to comfort them was Mrs. Delang. Sometimes she just asks them to sit quietly and let their inner peace take hold while she played the piano. Lily used to sit beside her playing those songs; that's why I'll be loving you always, stuck in their minds.

Mark listened to the "wop-wop" of the helicopter's blades. He had lived on a farm before marriage and joining the Air Force. How had he come this far, from a boot heel cotton farm to the rice paddies of Viet Nam? He could never think of himself as brave or fearless as he watched Charlie's movement, there in the deep forest. He was reconnaissance and he was scared. The enemy was getting closer and he had seen movement out in the field and thought he heard the sound of a baby's cry. As the helicopter's sound became stronger he saw the child dart from the thatched hut, an adult on its heels and he knew enemy eyes were focused on the movement, too. There was no other way to run, but from the enemy straight toward Mark with shots pelting the ground and the churn of air from the helicopter coming in for him. How was he to know saving the lives of mother and child would become only a memory of a war that had taken him from a good job, a new wife and a son to be born while he was away, to return home to a bleak future, void of promise? There was no hero's welcome, when he returned. He would never understand those who spat at him, while calling him and his buddies, "baby killers." His country had called and he had answered. Now as he struggles to gain control of his life, the old relationship suffered as a boy with his father simmers. When illness strikes, neither he nor his father are prepared for the ravage it will take with Mark's life. But Mark's faith becomes the Savior he shares with those he meets. Few have not met Mark Buchannan.
