The two major battles (e.g., Antietam and Gettysburg) that ended Lee's invasion of the North are among the most studied conflicts in the American Civil War. However, no full-book treatment comparing the two campaigns have been published-this volume attempts to rectify that deficiency. You will find reviews and comparisons of all aspects of the two campaigns, including: - The military and political environment at the beginning of each campaign- Why Lee undertook the invasions- The armies and their leaders- The condition of the armies- Military intelligence- Getting to the battlefield- Battles along the way- Battlefield terrain- Initial encounters - The three phases of battle in each campaign- The armies and their commanders-in-chiefs- Post-campaign events- Final thoughtsThis book is written for all readers. Anyone who is not familiar with the campaigns might wish to read the entire volume; those with greater knowledge will benefit by concentrating on the comparison sections.Lee Invades the North is illustrated with 35 maps and 23 comparison tables that illustrate the similarities and differences of the two campaigns.

Artist James Hope enlisted in the Union army during the early part of the American Civil War. A professional artist, Hope was a keen observer of camp life and battle scenes. The Battle of Antietam held a special place for Hope, and during the late 1880's into the 1890's, he created five large panoramic paintings of various aspects of the battle. Four of the five still exist today and are regularly displayed at the Antietam National Battlefield; the fifth was badly damaged in a flood, but a smaller version still exists. This booklet describes Hope's life and then reviews each of the five panoramic paintings in detail, beginning with a representation of the entire painting and then by dividing the painting into three sections and illustrating the major features of each in subsequent pages. A full-color panel is on the right side of each page and a description of the events/scenes, is on the left. This 48 full-color book illustrates Hope's Antietam paintings in detail never before seen.

The battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 marked the turning point of the American Civil War. The apex of the Confederacy's final major invasion of the North, the devastating defeat also marked the end of the South's offensive strategy against the North. From this battle until the end of the war, the Confederate armies largely remained defensive. The Artillery of Gettysburg is a thoughtful look at the role of the artillery during the July 1?3, 1863 conflict. Bradley M. Gottfried provides insight into how the two armies employed their artillery, how the different kinds of weapons functioned in battle, and the strategies for using each of them. He shows how artillery affected the ebb and flow of battle for both armies and thus provides a unique way of understanding the strategies of the Federal and Union commanders.
