This book, written primarily for the welding phase of the Aviation Structural Mechanic rating, deals with both oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding. The section devoted to the oxyacetylene method begins with an introduction to fundamental equipment, and is followed by practical instructions in welding techniques. Ensuing chapters deal with oxyacetylene cutting, brazing, soldering, and hand forging. The second section deals with arc welding, inert arc welding, and atomic-hydrogen welding. The discussions on arc welding begin with equipment and its operation, then move on to studies of the arc and electrodes. Information on factors governing arc welded joints and techniques of position welding follow. The first chapter of this course is an introductory chapter. It briefly explains the structure of the Construction Electrician rating, discusses duties of' the Construction Electrician, tells the method for advancement in rating, lists additional sources of information, and tells how the Construction Electrician fits into the Navy. The remainder of the course discusses technical material as it relates to the Construction Electrician rating. This material includes electrical diagrams and sketches, wiring, meters and controls, electrical generators and motors, electrical power and distribution systems, communication systems, and safety. The Study Guide on page vii indicates the chapters of this course that relate to the different service ratings. It is recommended, however, that the student study the entire course.

Section 578 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2000 required the Department of Defense to provide Military Funeral Honors to all eligible veterans, upon request, beginning January 1, 2000. This section also provides certain authorities to the Secretaries of the Military Departments to support this mission. Commanders at all levels recognize the importance of paying final tribute on behalf of a grateful nation to honor our nation's veterans. This manual institutes Navy wide the policies to implement the requirements of Section 578 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2000 as commanders respond rapidly and sensitively to requests for military funeral support. Honoring requests for Military Funeral Honors reflects the personal pride and esteem placed on military service and displays military professionalism to the Nation and the world. The provision of Military Funeral Honors is designated a total force mission. Both active and reserve forces may perform this mission.
