Document from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 11, , course: Political Science and International Relations, language: English, abstract: This paper takes a look at the debates surrounding EU enlargement from the perspective of norms entrepreneurship. It begins by introducing the challenges that come with enlargement including both administrative and financial commitments that EU members must bear as they enlarge. In the cost-benefits analysis, it would only mean that EU would enlarge in circumstances where benefits have surpassed costs. However this is not always the case with EU enlargement. Consequently leading to the need for a search of other motives behind the enlargement which this paper has attempted. The question to what extent are norms the drives of EU enlargement? has been answered with two objectives. First the examination of when and how norms are formulated in the process of an enlargement and secondly the evaluation of the role norms play in making the final decision to enlarge. This paper is using an historical approach has probed the debates and negotiations around EU enlargement from the Second to the CEECs enlargement accounting for the role of norms in shaping debates and framing members¿ behavior. Finally this paper has concluded that in cases where the need for norms entrepreneurship superseded the calculations of cost and benefits, EU framed the enlargement as a norms exercise hence the conclusion that norms play a key role in enlargement.
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 10, , course: Social Sciences / Power and Society, language: English, abstract: This paper contributes to the understanding of the relationship between law and power. Premised on the Hobbesian conceptualization of law as the command of the sovereign, this paper traces the resilience of this conceptualization through to the modern democratic states. It looks at the change of the sovereign from an individual to an office and now the diffusion of power through different systems of checks and balances instituted by the modern political system of democracy. In doing this, the paper answers the question; to what extent is law the reflection of the wishes of political elites in a society? It explores the sources of law and the role of law as an organizing agent with a view of exposing the resilience of the political elite¿s interests in law and in the use of law. The paper finally concludes that despite the changing nature of political systems, political elites have been able to preserve the law as a tool at their service. They have used their law making power to express their wishes in the law as well as used the complex procedural nature of law with several actors involved to serve their interest.
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 12, , course: Political Science and International Relations, Contemporary Balkan Politics, language: English, abstract: This paper provides an overview of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the international intervention in ending the conflict. It begins by tracing the origins of the conflict from the referendum of 29 February and 1 March of 1992 to the Srebrenica massacres. The failure by the international community to restore peace through the Lisbon and Vance-Owen peace plans through Srebrenica to finally Dayton has led to the question: Why would the international intervention in Bosnia and Herzegovina be considered less successful? In answering this question the paper has used four hypothesis of; poor timing, incoherent approach, poor understanding of the conflict situation by the international community and the product of the intervention in the Dayton Peace Agreement and its implication on governance and prospects on EU accession. The paper after thorough discussion of the intervention along the four lines of hypothesis has concluded that the poor timing which goes with the mandate affected the intervention negatively, the lack of coherent approach led to continued commitment of atrocities with poor understanding of the conflict situation informing the division of the country into ethnic lines from Lisbon through to Dayton hence less successful.
