"Das wahre Leben eines Künstlers besteht in der Ausbildung seiner Anlagen und in der Ausübung seines Talents, Die äusseren Umstände, die es begleiten, sind nur in sofern bedeutend und merkwürdig, als sie auf die Entwickelung seines Vermögens hindernd oder fördernd einwirkten, als sie seinem Genius diese oder jene Richtung gaben, durch welche der eigentümliche Charakter seiner Werke, als vereintes Erzeugnis der Naturanlage und Bildung, grossenteils mit bestimmt wird. Da nun in der Kunstgeschichte nur das wissenswürdig ist, was irgend einen merklichen Einfluss auf die Zustände der Kunst gehabt, was für ihre theoretische und praktische , ihre technische und ästhetische Entwickelung und Fortbildung fruchtbar gewesen ist, was sie richtig geleitet oder irre geführt hat.Der Kunstgeschichte ist so wenig mit blossen Namen von Künstlern, die nichts Ausgezeichnetes geleistet haben, als der Kunst mit mittelmässigen Werken gedient. "Die vorliegenden Aufsätze sind wärend eines mehrjährigen Aufenthalts in Rom entstanden, und der Verfasser glaubt, dass der Titel den Gesichtspunkt hinreichend angibt, aus dem er selbst sie betrachtet, und aus dem er sie auch von dem Leser betrachtet wünscht. Er entwarf sie zunächst zu seiner eignen Belehrung, da er bei dem theoretischen Kunststudium bald bemerkte, dass er seinen Gegenstand und sich selbst nur dann erst ganz verstehen lernte, wenn er die Gründe und Resultate seiner Betrachtungen auf dem Papier entwickelte. Einige besonders unter denen, die der zweite Band enthalten wird, kann man als Vorarbeiten zu einer Theorie der bildenden Kunst ansehen. Der Verfasser kam nicht ganz unvorbereitet nach Italien. Von frühester Jugend auf durch Neigung zur Kunst getrieben, hatte er sich mehrere Jahre lang praktisch mit derselben beschäftigt, als er späterhin auch von dem , was bis dahin die Philosophie im Gebiete der Ästhetik geleistet, eine wissenschaftliche Kenntnis zu erwerben Gelegenheit hatte. Er brachte also wenigstens ein an der Natur kunstmässig geübtes Auge, und einen durch das Allgemeine der Ästhetik vorgebildeten Geist mit, die ihn in den Stand setzten, sich in dem reichen Gebiete der Kunst leichter zu orientieren, als ihm würde möglich gewesen sein, wenn er, vielleicht als ein tüchtiger, schulgerechter Schriftgelehrter, aber ohne alle praktische und theoretische Vorkenntnis der Kunst, das Heiligtum derselben betreten hätte."
