""The Beggar Student"" is a comic opera in three acts, written by Carl Milloecker and first performed in 1882. The story takes place in 18th-century Poland and follows the adventures of a beggar named Symon who falls in love with a wealthy countess named Laura. In order to win her heart, Symon pretends to be a student of noble birth and enrolls in the same university as Laura's brother. Along the way, he encounters a cast of colorful characters, including a scheming professor, a group of drunken students, and a band of gypsies. The opera is known for its catchy melodies, witty dialogue, and lighthearted humor. It has been performed numerous times since its debut and remains a popular work in the operatic canon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
