Baubles is a novel written by Carolyn Wells and published in 1917. The book is set in New York City and follows the story of a young woman named Pauline Barrett who inherits a large sum of money from her wealthy uncle. With her newfound wealth, Pauline is able to live a life of luxury and indulgence, but soon realizes that money cannot buy happiness. As Pauline navigates the upper-class society of New York City, she becomes entangled in a love triangle with two very different men: the charming and wealthy Harry Kendall and the kind-hearted but poor artist, Bob Van Dyne. As she struggles to choose between these two men, Pauline must also confront the reality of her own superficiality and the emptiness of her privileged lifestyle.Throughout the novel, Wells explores themes of wealth, love, and the pursuit of happiness. It was the third week in September when the Fairfields left the seashore and returned to their Vernondale home."Now, my child," said Mr. Fairfield, as they sat on the veranda after dinner, "I will unfold to you my plans for the coming winter, and you may accept, or reject, or amend them as you please.""Proceed," said Patty, settling herself comfortably in her wicker chair; "I feel in an amiable mood this evening, and will probably agree to anything you may suggest.""I've been thinking for some time," went on her father, "that I don't want to spend the coming winter in Vernondale. I would much rather be in New York.""Reason number one-Nan," said Patty, checking it off on her forefinger and smiling at her father."Yes," he responded, with an answering smile, "she is reason number one, but there are others."To readers who are unfamiliar with Patty's earlier history we may say right here that her mother had died when Patty was but three years old. At present she lived with her father in their little home in Vernondale, an establishment of which Patty greatly prided herself on her management.Recently Mr. Fairfield had become engaged to Miss Nan Allen, a young lady who lived in Philadelphia, and who was a dear friend of Patty's.

I had absolutely no reason, save Parmalee's babblings, to suspect this woman of crime, but I could not rid myself of a conviction that she had every appearance of being capable of it.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Quixotic is his enterprise and hopeless his adventure is, Who seeks for jocularities that haven't yet been said; The world has joked incessantly for over fifty centuries, And every joke that's possible has long ago been made. I started as a humourist with lots of mental fizziness, But humour is a drug which it's the fashion to abuse; For my stock-in-trade, my fixtures and the good-will of the business No reasonable offer I am likely to refuse. And if anybody choose He may circulate the news That no reasonable offer I am likely to refuse. Oh, happy was that humourist-the first that made a pun at all- Who when a joke occurred to him, however poor and mean, Was absolutely certain that it never had been done at all- How popular at dinners must that humourist have been! Oh, the days when some step-father for a query held a handle out, - The door-mat from the scraper, is it distant very far? And when no one knew where Moses was when Aaron put the candle out, And no one had discovered that a door could be a-jar! But your modern hearers are In their tastes particular, And they sneer if you inform them that a door can be a jar! In search of quip and quiddity I've sat all day alone, apart- And all that I could hit on as a problem was-to find Analogy between a scrag of mutton and a Bony-part, Which offers slight employment to the speculative mind.

"I can't stand it, Patty, I simply can't stand it!" "But you'll have to, Phil, dear. I'm engaged to Little Billee, and some day I'm going to marry him. And that's all there is about it." "Oh, no, Patty, that isn't all about it. I'm not going to give you up so easily. You don't know how I care for you. You've no idea what a determined chap I can be, --" "Now, stop, Phil. You know you promised that we should be friends and nothing more. You promised not to ask for more than my friendship-didn't you, now?" "I did but that was only so you'd stay friendly with me, and I thought, -forgive the egotism, -I thought I could yet win your love. Patty, you don't care such a lot for Farnsworth, do you, now?" "Indeed I do, Phil. Why, do you suppose I'd be engaged to him if I didn't love him more than anybody in all the world? Of course I wouldn't!" "I know you think so, Patty," Phil's handsome face was grave and kind, "but you may be mistaken." "I'm not mistaken, Philip, and unless you change your subject of conversation, I'll have to ask you to go away. I should think you'd scorn to talk like that to a girl who's engaged to another man!" "I should think I would, too, Patty. But I can't help it. Oh, my girl, my little love, I can't give you up. I can't tamely stand aside and make no effort to win you back! I'm not asking anything wrong, Patty, only don't send me away; let me try once again for you, -" "It's too late, Phil," and Patty looked a little frightened at his vehemence.

Patty was curled up in her favourite big easy-chair in her own study. Though called a study, because it had been used as such during her schooldays, the pretty room was really more like a boudoir. Her desk was still there, but was now filled with programmes, friendly letters, and social correspondence instead of school themes or problems. The general colouring of the room was green, but the sash curtains of thin yellow silk, and the heap of yellow sofa cushions, did much to lighten the effect, and gave the room a sunshiny air, even on a dull day. The couch, and the two big, soft, cuddly chairs were upholstered in yellow-flowered chintz, and on the pale green walls hung Patty's favourite pictures, and many curios or souvenirs of her year spent abroad. It was the first of March, so the room was brightened both by a big bowlful of yellow daffodils and a blazing wood fire. The two things Patty liked best in life were warmth and colour, and so to-day she was sitting near the fire, with the splendid yellow glory of the daffodils in full view. But she was not looking at them, for she was poring over a book. When Patty read she usually pored, for she was eager and enthusiastic over any story in which she was interested.
