The stimulus produced by the legal requirement to georeference rural properties, demanded by INCRA, is leading companies to make progressive use of geotechnologies, although they are still a long way from making real use of the possibilities arising from these tools. This book evaluates two axes of the system: the agricultural company and the geotechnology consulting company. It shows that the current applications of georeferencing are concentrated on the tax, land and environmental aspects, guiding producers in the implementation of the frameworks required by the legislation and which favour them under the laws in force, avoiding penalties and enabling conditions for land movements, loans and public financing. There is also a market trend towards working with database technology via the internet (clouds). Other applications, such as land use management through remote sensing products and precision cartography, are suggested in the form of charts and maps. It can be seen that geoprocessing, if combined with strategic field visits, becomes a tool with a high potential to contribute to optimising management.

Monitoring spectral characteristics over time using satellite images is scientifically recognised as providing information that can be associated with the type of cultivar or variety, vigour, density, health, nutrition and phenological stages, by conveniently using the electromagnetic information reflected by the earth's surface, using, for example, so-called vegetation indices. Knowledge of the spectral signature of different irrigated rice cultivars is an important tool for monitoring and inspecting agricultural crops, as it can facilitate the work of public certification bodies and grain receiving industries. This study monitored the cultivars IRGA 409, IRGA 424, IRGA 426, IRGA 428, IRGA 429, IRGA 430, PUITÁ and GURI. By associating field data and NDVI time profiles throughout the crop cycle, the spectral characteristics of the cultivars were described. The spectral behaviour of the different cultivars can be differentiated, but it is clear that this depends critically on the quality of the data and the processing.

The management of physical space, in all its forms, can benefit from the inclusion of techniques and procedures based on new information technologies. The aim of this book is to investigate the possibilities of applying geographic information systems (GIS) in order to contribute to some aspects of the management of urban and agricultural activities. Although this is not a new technology, because its principles have been used for a long time, remote sensing and GIS are tools that are currently widely available on the internet, even with free software options and free information. This work integrates field research, through limnological analyses, with the processing of satellite images and the use of the Georeferenced Information Processing System (SPRING). In addition to the fact that these tools have proved effective in visualising potentially polluting points, it is believed that this management model of information from the urban and rural areas of the municipality of Itaqui, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, could lead to new ideas and applications to help decision-makers.
