" Ces Conférences n'ont pas été parlées; je les ai lues. N'ayant jamais discouru devant un auditoire nombreux, je m'étais défié d'une émotion probable. Elles ont été improvisées cependant: je dictais dans la journée ce que je dirais le soir. Il y paraît, commue le lecteur ne tardera pas à le reconnaître; il trouvera plus loin des expressions dix fois répétées, des tours de phrase d'une correction douteuse, et un pitoyable désordre. Il ne m'eût pas été impossible, je pense, de remédier quelque peu à cela par des retouches. Je me suis pourtant décidé à publier ces quatre causeries telles quelles. Voici pourquoi. Des remaniements, même de petite importance, même de pure forme, auraient pu, si l'on y avait pris garde, inspirer le soupçon de modifications plus essentielles. J'ai voulu me réserver la possibilité d'affirmer d'une façon absolue qu'aucun changement n'a été apporté au texte de mes conférences. L'enfant secoua la tête; il ne croyait pas qu'un tel miracle fût possible. - Prends garde ! reprit la fée; l'Amour n'aime pas que l'on doute de sa puissance, et il se pourrait que tu fusses châtié d'une façon cruelle à cause de ton peu de foi. Cependant, puisque tu souffres, je veux bien venir à ton aide. Fais un voeu, je l'exaucerai. - Je voudrais être le plus puissant prince de la terre, afin d'épouser la princesse que j'adore. - Ah ! que ne vas-tu, sans te troubler d'un tel souci, chanter une chanson d'amour sous sa fenêtre ! Enfin, puisque je l'ai promis, il sera fait selon ton désir. Mais ç'avait été peu de temps avant la première représentation de Tannhæuser à l'Opéra; impatienté par mille tracasseries, par des misérabilités, comme il disait, il en était arrivé au dernier degré de l'exaspération nerveuse. Un chat en colère, hérissé, toutes griffes dehors. Le moment était mal choisi pour lier connaissance avec lui, et d'ailleurs mon extrême jeunesse eût été un obstacle à une familiarité un peu intime.
