THE kettle began it! Don't tell me what Mrs. Peerybingle said. I know better. Mrs. Peerybingle may leave it on record to the end of time that she couldn't say which of them began it; but, I say the kettle did. I ought to know, I hope!

  • - Tome I

A Holiday Romance By Charles Dickens Novelist, born at Landport, near Portsmouth, where his father was a clerk in the Navy Pay-Office. The hardships and mortifications of his early life, his want of regular schooling, and his miserable time in the blacking factory, which form the basis of the early chapters of David Copperfield, are largely accounted for by the fact that his father was to a considerable extent the prototype of the immortal Mr. Micawber; but partly by his being a delicate and sensitive child, unusually susceptible to suffering both in body and mind. He had, however, much time for reading, and had access to the older novelists, Fielding, Smollett, and others. A kindly relation also took him frequently to the theatre, where he acquired his life-long interest in, and love of, the stage. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

This is Charles Dickens book of 1853, Charles Dickens is one of the best Author of a century back that we all know about, this book goes with the following introductions: A Chancery judge once had the kindness to inform me, as one of a company of some hundred and fifty men and women not labouring under any suspicions of lunacy, that the Court of Chancery, though the shining subject of much popular prejudice (at which point I thought the judge's eye had a cast in my direction), was almost immaculate. There had been, he admitted, a trivial blemish or so in its rate of progress, but this was exaggerated and had been entirely owing to the "parsimony of the public," which guilty public, it appeared, had been until lately bent in the most determined manner on by no means enlarging the number of Chancery judges appointed-I believe by Richard the Second, but any other king will do as well

  • - A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, The Haunted Man
    af Charles Dickens
    272,95 kr.

Dickens is widely known for his masterpiece "A Christmas Carol." Yet it was only the first in a series of five short novels set in the Christmas season, composed by Dickens over six years. Each is a unique classic, and a profound celebration of Christmas, in its own right. The entire series of Christmas Books is here collected in a single volume, including: "A Christmas Carol" Ebeneezer Scrooge's contempt for Christmas is confronted by four spirits who reveal the value of Christmas and the nature of a good life. "The Chimes" A pitiless man who has lost his belief in human goodness and nay higher calling for humanity is gifted with a Christmas vision of his loved ones' lives after his death. "The Cricket on the Hearth" A magical cricket plays the role of guardian angel to a small family through many trials, tribulations, and joys. "The Battle of Life" A young woman's suspicious disappearance leaves her family in doubt of her good character. "The Haunted Man" A man tormented by brooding upon wrongs done to him accepts a spirit's offer to lose his memory of past harms, only to find that a deeper conversion is needed to relieve his feelings of anger.
