Charles Joseph Fickey may be sworn to secrecy about his covert activities during WW II, but the haiku in this book reveal his obvious talent as an observer of people and their nature, both as individuals and as members of society. Some 1,300-plus poems give him away! Arranged in no particular order, the haiku address matters of love (of course), the weather, math, eternity, war, science fiction, friendship, space travel, the nature of man, the nature of haiku, and the nature of the Universe; and much, much more. You think you are going to stop, now. "Well, just one more," and "one more." Pages later, you are still reading, "Just one more." Mr. Fickey is clever that way!
As he truthfully recorded in his first novel, Sworn to Secrecy for Life, Charles Joseph Fickey met the woman of his dreams in the course of carrying out a clandestine mission for President Franklin Roosevelt during WW II. The young hero promised to return for Ilse. This book is-far more than the first novel-a closer to fact than to fiction recounting of the young man's return to Germany and his determination to find his woman. Because he was still in the Army, and because the War was still not over, our hero's movements were constrained by his work. Readers of Sworn to Secrecy of Life will find some of their old friends herein, and some of the old scenery. But one wonders how on earth, if indeed ever, the two lovers will be united. True to form, Mr. Fickey's chapters always end with the requirement that the reader turn the page to find out what happened next. There's your clue!
