Full text. For anyone who cares about a more fair-minded society where every individual can flourish, The Man-Made World; or, Our Androcentric Culture proves to be an inspirational volume. In this probing critique of "androcentric culture," pioneering feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman (The Yellow Wallpaper, Herland) analyzes with wit and insight the many negative effects of male domination, not only on women in particular but on the welfare of the human race as a whole. Society's long history of male hegemony and female subservience has not enhanced the natural qualities of the human race but rather distorted them, says Gilman, as can be seen in many of society's institutions. In separate chapters she discusses family, art, literature, games and sports, ethics and religion, education, fashion, law and government, crime and punishment, politics and warfare, and industry and economics. In each case she shows how the domineering male influence has caused grievous problems.

As brilliant, bold, and prescient as it was when first was published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper stands strong not only as an stellar example of early American Feminist literature, but as a prime example of the short story as well.Told as brief journal entries penned by an unnamed narrator, the unsettling story of this woman and her preventable descent into madness illuminates an all-too-common aspect of the lives most women experienced in the 19th century, and to an unfortunate extent, still do today.Semi-autobiographical, the author Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was a proud feminist, humanist, social reformer, artist, writer, editor, and publisher. Her works are too great in number to list here, but run the gamut from poetry and short stories, to academic studies and drama. Her autobiography, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was published shortly after her death in 1935.This Yellow Wallpaper Press edition features the unabridged story along with a brief biography and the full article "Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper" penned by Gilman and published in her magazine The Forerunner in October 1913.

"The Yellow Wallpaper," first published in 1882, is largely based on the personal experience of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Like many women of that era, Gilman was subjected to the "rest cure" for postpartum depression. The cure, pioneered by Silas Weir Mitchell, forbade reading, writing, socializing, exercise, and thinking in general. For many women, the treatment was worse than the cure. The story chronicles the story of a women diagnosed with a "slight hysterical tendency" and shut up in a wallpapered yellow room in an old mansion over the summer. With no intellectual stimuli other than the wallpaper, the narrator becomes increasingly intrigued with its intricate pattern, twisting and turning it in her mind until she sees a woman on all fours crawling creeping behind the pattern. Believing she must free the woman in the wallpaper, the narrator secretly begins stripping it from the walls. Tension mounts between the characters in the story, right along with the narrator's increasing derangement. The story reaches its peak as the narrator increasingly identifies herself as the trapped old woman. When her husband finally discovers her in this sorry state, he faints on the spot. The narrator, unfazed, continues creeping over his body each time she circles the room, trying to free the old woman-and ultimately herself, from the wallpaper's deeply disturbing pattern. The book's indictment of the "rest cure" contributed, eventually, to its discontinuation. The patronizing attitudes and actions of the narrator's husband, combined with her childish position, drove her to retreat into the only place she was allowed to actively use her mind or exercise the slightest bit of control over her life-the yellow wallpaper. Forced to pretend that her marriage was happy, forced to pretend that she was overcoming depression, and restricted from any form of self-expression, the narrator was eventually driven insane. The importance of patient input into their treatment, as well as of self-expression, are important themes of this classic feminist work.

Three male explorers set out to reach a legendary land where only women live, and find¿to their surprise¿that the legends are true. This country hidden in the mountains is a feminist utopia. There are no men, nor is there war, poverty, or crime. The residents subsist on food from cultivated forests, maintain immaculate houses and roads, and reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis. Although the main characters are men, their role is to show us how their notions about society and womanhood are humorously upturned.Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an outspoken activist and suffragist, most famous nowadays for her short story ¿The Yellow Wallpaper.¿ As a writer, she was stunningly prolific. She founded The Forerunner, a monthly magazine for which she personally wrote every article, story, and poem. Because she chose to run no advertisements, she covered the cost of printing the magazine herself. In contrast to many women¿s publications of the day, Gilman advocated for equal rights and expanded social roles for women.Originally published serially in The Forerunner in 1915, Herland was not republished as a standalone work until decades later. It is the second in Gilman¿s Utopian trilogy, along with Moving the Mountain and With Her in Ourland.

2023 Hardcover Reprint of 1892 Edition. This short story is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, illustrating attitudes in the 19th century toward women's health, both physical and mental. Presented in the first person, the story is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. Forgoing other rooms in the house, the couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is forbidden from working, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of exercise and air, so she can recuperate from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women in that period. Gilman used her writing to explore the role of women in America at the time. She explored issues such as the lack of a life outside the home and the oppressive forces of the patriarchal society. Through her work Gilman paved the way for writers such as Alice Walker and Sylvia Plath.

A powerful collection of early feminist stories from the activist and writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman.Gilman created a world that could be viewed from the feminist gaze. She focused on how women were not just stay-at-home mothers they were expected to be but also people who had dreams, who were able to travel and work just as men did, and whose goals included a society where women were just as important as men. In the early 1900s this was striking and revolutionary. The stories in this collection are: 'A Coincidence'; 'According To Solomon', 'An Offender', 'A Middle-Sized Artist', 'Martha's Mother', 'Her Housekeeper', 'When I Was A Witch', 'Making a Living', 'A Coincidence, The Cottagette', 'The Boys and the Butter', 'My Astonishing Dodo', and 'A Word In Season'. Foundations of Feminist Fiction. The early 1900s saw a quiet revolution in literature dominated by male adventure heroes. Both men and women moved beyond the norms of the male gaze to write from a different gender perpective, sometimes with female protagonists, but also expressing the universal freedom to write on any subject whatsoever.
