Six separate compositions reflecting on different elements of society and the people wherein. 1) "The Secretary and the Pain," is about the U.S. Secretary of State's outstanding speech at the United Nations, the subsequent troop deployment of U.S. troops to Iraq and the suffering that followed. 2) "The Poor and Decrepit Old Men," looks into the minds of the poor, seemingly lost, and forgotten older men of America. 3) "Monument Avenue," speaks to the fact that there was a major thoroughfare in Richmond, Virginia, honoring the Confederate and how that avenue was the proud gathering site for many who worshiped the Confederate.4) "New Black Martyrs and New Black Heroes." In search of symbols of greatness, Black Americans create martyrs and heroes out of those who rarely deserve such a status. 5) "AWOL: Absent Without Leave." Black Americans have continually gone into battle for this country in an effort to allow others to be free, all the while enduring segregation, racism and brutality back home. "AWOL," looks at a Black soldier in Vietnam and his simplistic attitude. 6) "Eight to the Tenth Power," reflects upon abortions. This is one of my most controversial works. The questions raised and statements made are sure to generate anger, debate, obscenities, name-calling and denunciation.

There are thirty-seven separate selections in "Crickets." Some are political: ("Negroes and Their Half-White, Half-Black President: The Before and After"); ("A Boy and His Grandpa"); ("Africa So Bad, So Sad"). Some are erotic: ("Weimar and the Hotel Elephant"); (Back When"); ("What Do They Say,"); and ("An Old Woman, A Young Man"); Most are reflective: "Just a Piece of Metal"); ("The Killings"); (Paint Rock"); ("A Writer in Malmo"); ("Kieran Padraig"); ("Winter is Coming"); and, ("Reverend Edmore Saul") and ("Crickets'). These are some of the thirty-seven pieces I've placed in "Crickets." Born and raised in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama.Attended and graduated from R.B. Hudson High School, Selma, AL.After graduation, I joined the United States Air Force, being honorably discharged in September 1961.Rejoined the United States Air Force in 1962. A black man from the Deep South - Selma, Alabama, writing prose about his life, the lives of those he grew up with; and, the rarely understood life of blacks living in a small, segregated southern town; and, the consequences of the Iraq War. This manuscript has three separate compositions: "Back When;" "Dried Chicken Feet and Turtle With No Tongues;" and "The Secretary and The Pain." The manuscript has 456 pages and 29,918 words. This includes the Contents, the Introduction, a few words of "thanks," as well as, a very short paragraph about the author. I would like this book published under the pseudonym "Chester Alfonso."

This is a work of prose about the life and times of a man born and raised in the Deep South. A man who has traveled and lived much of his life outside the United States of America. This is the telling of tales concerning politics, war, racial interactions, living internationally, interracial relationships, abortion, prognostications, beauty, sadness, exploitation, and the taking of innocent and not so innocent life. This is a work that will make you laugh, cry, explode with anger, discuss over coffee, and generate the asking of many questions.

This book is being published under the pseudonym "Chester Alfonso."

Eight to the Tenth Power is a controversial book concerning the emotions, decisions, anger, philosophies surrounding abortion and a woman's right to choose. The constant questions surrounding what might the new child have been if it had not been terminated, permeates and consumes the creation of this book. The intent is not to belittle or cast blame upon those who have chosen to abort. Rather, it is to question whether that choice somehow needs revisiting. I don't know if a million, a billion or two billion abortions will ring an end to this procedure. I do know that it is something worthy of discussion and reflection. As a society respectful of feeling and steeped in certain humane values, I think it is time to really pause before making the wrong "choice."
