Tala and Muluc are united but time is running out and they have no idea what to do. Uncertainty and unrest follow them at every turn. The university wants the newcomers gone. The plastics don't trust their rescuers and are suffering withdrawal from their tech. If Muluc and Tala can't find a way to consolidate the groups and discover how to put the Darkness back, they will lose all hope of fulfilling their promise.
Fourteen-year-old Tala doesn't care that the world is divided between techies and nature lovers, she has her own problems. In her tight-knit, multi-cultural community, nestled in a secluded forest, her main concerns revolve around gaining the fickle attentions of her Frenchman, Alain, and avoiding the derision of her frenemies, Gwyn and Darby. Then the dream came; horrifyingly vivid and before she could catch her breath, she was thrown into the middle of a century old battle. Now she must realize the powers she didn't know she possessed in order to fight an enemy she never knew existed.
In the year 2027, the world is divided. Fifteen-year-old Muluc hails from Scarsdale, a leading-edge tech city that despises all things Nature and cares only about the latest nano/bio-tech interfaces. He prefers the idyllic surroundings of what was once called Hillside University, his grandfather's commune, where tech is used as little as possible. He values his connection to the natural world where people are the main priority, and Muluc is surrounded by friends. But then his grandfather dies leaving him with an heirloom ring and the fear that he'll never feel safe again. As Muluc is cut off from his sanctuary, and facing another year of beatings, his father insists he focus on finding his place in society and forget the silliness of his luddite grandfather. But Muluc can't let go of the hope of escape. He begins to wear his grandfather's ring in secret and experiences visions, a message being whispered to him through generations. The elusive message taunts him with the possibility of a life different than the one he has. Now Muluc must make a choice: either finally accept his life in the city, or do the scariest thing he can think of and take a leap of faith. But will such a choice put everything and everyone he loves at risk?
