Diese Studie rekonstruiert unterschiedliche Bedeutungen des Privaten während des NS-Regimes und versteht das Private als ein Deutungsmuster, mit dem gesellschaftliche und politische Prozesse analysiert wurden. Auf der Grundlage von autobiographischen Beiträgen deutscher Emigranten, die 1940 in Harvard gesammelt wurden, zeigt der Autor, dass es zu einer zentralen sprachlichen Praxis wurde, zwischen Privatem und Politischem zu unterscheiden. Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung drangen selbst in die Sprache des Privaten ein. So werden bisherige Forschungen zum Nationalsozialismus um eine neue Sichtweise aus der Historischen Semantik ergänzt.
