In Lidewyde (1868) beschrijft Busken Huet de liefdesperikelen van een jongeman die moet schipperen tussen zijn zachtmoedige verloofde en een demonische femme fatale. Vanwege de onverbloemde erotiek in de roman veroorzaakte het boek een schandaal. Een tweede in korte tijd, want drie jaar eerder werd Busken Huet al voor het hof gedaagd omdat hij de koningin (Sophie) in een artikel had opgevoerd. Hierdoor werd hij gedwongen zijn redacteurschap van De Gids op te geven. In het publicatiejaar van Lidewyde vertrok Busken Huet naar Nederlands-Indië.De Nederlander Conrad Busken Huet (1826 – 1886) was predikant, schrijver en prominent literatuurcriticus in de negentiende-eeuwse Nederlandse letteren. Als eerste Nederlandse predikant bracht hij het modernistische gedachtegoed in brede kring onder de aandacht, in een poging om zo de kloof tussen de Bijbel en de moderne wetenschap te dichten. Zijn kritieken, vooral die hij voor De Gids schreef, waren vlijmscherp, soms spottend van toon en vaak gericht op gevestigde schrijvers, waardoor hij een reputatie opbouwde als gevreesd criticus. Busken Huet meende dat het de taak van de criticus was om de Nederlandse literatuur naar het peil van Duitsland en Frankrijk te brengen. Dit is in lijn met zijn overtuiging dat de literatuur een uiting van beschaving is, dat aan de literatuur de stand van de maatschappij valt af te lezen. Nimmer tevreden met Nederland, dat volgens hem overgeleverd was aan de barbarij, vertrok Busken Huet naar Nederlands-Indië en daarna Parijs.
