The good news of Jesus Christ is not about getting your ticket out of hell and then just waiting around for heaven. The Bible gives metaphors for the Christian life such as: a race, a battle, a wrestling match-all of which call for training. We are called to train ourselves for godliness, empowered by the Holy Spirit (1 Timothy 4:7-8). A true Christian trains for godliness not so he can be saved by these good works, but because he has already been shockingly saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone! Spiritual disciplines (or habits) such as simplicity, private devotional life, local church gatherings, helpfulness and personal evangelism, friendship, learning, and stewardship are some of the Spirit-empowered practices that help you as a believer maintain a fresh closeness with God. A place where your intimacy with him does not depend on a stirring speaker, or a great worship experience, or a captivating concert. Rather, your closeness with your Lord simply exists as the refreshing fruit of your walk with him. May this book serve the church by helping Christ-followers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and vocations enjoy God's riches in the routine of daily life.
