I 1992 gik startskuddet på et af de mest ambitiøse projekter inden for botanikken i nyere tid: Atlas Flora Danica. Medlemmer af Dansk Botanisk Forening inddelte landet i 1.300 kvadrater på hver 5 X 5 kilometer fordelt i hele landet og gik i gang med at undersøge floraen.Kvadrat for kvadrat, år for år og egn for egn har fritidsbotanikere, professionelle såvel som amatører, organiseret under Dansk Botanisk Forening registreret voksesteder for vilde planter i alle egne af landet.Det er blevet til næsten 1 million fundoplysninger fordelt på cirka 3.000 plantearter. De udgør grundlaget for de 2.125 udbredelseskort, der præsenteres i bogen, som nu – 23 år efter opstarten – endelig er færdig.For alle fundne arter og underarter gøres kort rede for, hvornår og hvordan de er kommet til landet, hvilke voksesteder de foretrækker, og hvor i landet de er fundet. Der gives også et bud på, om de er blevet sjældnere eller mere almindelige. De mange informative baggrundskapitler giver forståelse for, hvorfor planterne vokser, hvor de gør. Derved får man optimalt udbytte af at studere udbredelseskortene og opnår en større glæde ved at finde, iagttage og udforske planterne i naturen
