The easiest adversary to defeat is one that is not aware of the contest, not prepared for the struggle, and not equipped for battle. The Apostle Paul did not want the believers in Ephesus to be unaware, unprepared, or unarmed. "Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm." (Ephesians 6:13, NASB) Paul's warning and words of encouragement still hold value today. In a world where people feel defeated, discouraged, persecuted, and hopeless the Full Armor of God is just as important as it was to the people living in Ephesus. In order to stand firm against evil schemes it is essential that we have a thorough understanding of the Full Armor of God. Beyond understanding we must also have the training to know when and how to use this vital equipment. The Full Armor of God In Action is a study guide launched from Ephesians 6:10-20. There are two main sections in this guide. The Physical Armor Plus Spiritual Application section gives a concise background on each piece of armor. Once we explain the basic use of each piece, there are 16 studies which provide illustrations based on the lives of biblical characters. You can learn how to benefit from the Full Armor of God by studying Joseph, David, Daniel, Stephen, and many others. As you study the victories, and failures of Old Testament Heroes and New Testament Saints, you will learn how to gain confidence and hope for your own life. The Full Armor of God is powerful and effective. Through this study you will see it in action, and receive training to accomplish eternal victories for the glory of God.
One of the largest selections in any bookstore is found in the personal finance section. There are hundreds if not thousands of books covering investing, entrepreneurship, owning real estate, budgeting, and retirement. Some are books written by successful self-made millionaires, while some detail the findings of those who have researched all the markets and know all the secrets. Depending on the bookstore selection, you may also find several books written for Christian personal finance. In some ways, they are exactly the same as the other books, with a section on tithing included near the front of the text. The Bible actually has very little in common with these modern financial guides. Although the Bible speaks often of money, the very foundational concepts are fundamentally different. When we try to impose modern day money and budgeting thought onto the Bible, we often end up frustrated, defeated, and in debt. A Good and Faithful Steward takes a completely different approach. Instead of focusing on money, this study demonstrates the importance of stewardship in every aspect of our lives. Starting with Adam and Eve we see that stewardship of God's creation was instituted on the sixth day of creation. As soon as man was created, he was given responsibility to rule over all the earth. The significance of stewardship, faithfully managing God's resources based on God's priorities, continues to be found in both the Old and New Testament. By studying the challenges, victories, and mistakes of Job, Joseph, David, Solomon, Esther, Paul, and the early church, we can develop an accurate understanding of stewardship that will impact every aspect of our lives.
Through many wise sayings found in the book of Proverbs, Solomon encourages us to value, pursue, and acquire wisdom. Wisdom is a DOORWAY which will lead us to knowledge, discernment, understanding, healing, and long life. Wisdom points us in a DIRECTION that takes us from foolish choices to a life of increasingly wise decisions. Wisdom is a DESTINATION which allows us to enjoy rewards which are greater than silver, gold, and precious jewels. Through this study guide we explore the power and the potential for wisdom, the righteous application of truth with kindness.
Throughout the ages men have searched for hidden treasures. Jewels, coins, and precious metals are sought that are worth a fortune...If only they can be found. Time, money, and physical energy have been spent on the search for articles of fame and wealth. Proverbs 31:10 tells about a hidden treasure that is worth more than jewels: "An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels." If gold is worthy of a treasure quest, then a victorious wife is worth all that much more. Her value surpasses that of any legendary fortune. No treasure hunt would be successful without a treasure map. Proverbs 31:10-31 provides a detailed map with a complete description of a wise wife. Those who seek an excellent wife are able to gain insight through this poem. For those who desire to be a victorious wife, there are guidelines and lessons to be learned. And, for everyone who wishes to pursue wisdom in their life, there are words of instruction, concrete examples, and enlightening illustrations. "Wisdom - The Next Step" is a study guide launched from Proverbs 31:10-31. Each study allows the student to explore the treasures found in this amazing poem. Beyond the poem, the study provides insight and instruction regarding common themes found both in the poem, and in the entire collection of Proverbs. Everyday living meets practical wisdom through this engaging study.
Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus are well-known for their encouragement to these two young leaders. Many people are familiar with passages such as "...a workman that needs not to be ashamed..." "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God..." "For the love of money is the root of all evil..." For many years these letters have been the source for instructions to churches and church leaders. Paul's writings, however, go beyond elders and deacons. There are specific directions for husbands, wives, old men, and young women. Through these letters we read about working together in our homes, at church, and in the workplace. "Ready to Receive, Ready to Share" presents a unique "3-D" approach to studying Paul's letters known as I Timothy, II Timothy, and Titus. Four main themes that are found in each letter are studied in parallel. Rather than starting with the first verse of I Timothy and working to the last verse in Titus, this study identifies these common themes and examines all three letters at the same time. This Bible study guide includes 13 lessons for individuals or small groups. The questions and study material are intended for participants who are high school age through adults.
The word GLORY is found over 300 times in the Bible. Glory is associated with God, angels, kingdoms, men, heaven, stars, clouds, and plagues. Some of the most important concepts in the Bible are related to glory. In his letter to the Romans, Paul proclaimed that everyone has fallen short of the glory of God. While writing to the Corinthians, Paul encouraged them to do all to the glory of God. The church in Thessalonica was implored to walk in a manner worthy of God's kingdom and glory. Our first challenge is to understand the meaning and significance of glory as found in the Bible. By focusing on glory from Genesis to Revelation we are able to gain insight and important instruction into the glory of God and the glory of men. Moses and Pharaoh each encountered God's glory, but the outcomes were much different. If we are to live a life worthy of God's glory we need to comprehend and appreciate the full meaning of glory. Investing in an in-depth study of glory will return great rewards including a clearer knowledge of God's glory and a better understanding of how to walk a glorifying life.
Acknowledging and Appreciating the Attributes, Authority, Actions, and Affections of the Almighty God. "Worship in the Bible" presents a unique look into the worship lives of people throughout the Old and New Testaments. They celebrated as they saw God working in the world around them and in the challenges they faced in their own lives. You will learn by observing people as they respond through songs, poems, prayers, times of exaltation, and positions of submission. Working on your own or in a small group, through these 14 studies you will be encouraged to consider how you can express your joy and gratitude to our loving God.
The Old Testament book of Joshua is named after, well, Joshua. Without a doubt there are many great stories and many great leadership lessons to be learned by studying the life of Joshua, in the book of Joshua. More than likely you have heard about the Jordan River and the Walls of Jericho. And, probably you know that Joshua was a mighty military commander, with many great conquests. Maybe you have even heard about the Hivite schemers. When you go beyond the well-known, the book of Joshua also contains many other stories, and many other lessons, about many other leaders. There are kings and priests and warriors and officials. There are dads and families. There is one infamous woman who outsmarted a king and saved her entire family. And, there is one famous leader, Moses, whose legacy was carried on by Joshua. Throughout these stories and the events chronicled in the book of Joshua, is the central theme of partnering with God. Leading and following require obeying and trusting the LORD. And above all, we are reminded both leaders and followers must be strong and courageous.
Jesus wept. Sarah laughed. Goliath walked, but David ran. The lame beggar leaped. King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face. The rich man dressed in purple. Jacob put sackcloth on his loins. The Apostle Paul correctly interpreted the body language of the Philippian jailer, cried out with a loud voice, and saved his life. The Holy Bible is filled with body language, visual clues, and informative sounds. Sometimes it is so obvious that we do not pay attention. Sometimes we notice, but do not know exactly how to interpret the signs. "Body Language in the Bible" provides a comprehensive study of nonverbal communication from Genesis to Revelation. The workbook format guides users as they progress through five different elements of nonverbal communication: Posture, Actions, Appearance, Sounds, and Space. The key to reading biblical body language is to realize that every time the Bible describes someone's physical position or appearance there is a specific purpose. If someone sits down, there is a reason. When the nation of Israel cries out, they are expressing an urgent need. People bow low to show submission. Those who are blessed rise up to places of prominence. Learning how to discover and understand nonverbal clues in the Bible will greatly enhance your personal study times. Becoming an engaged observer will increase your ability to teach, share, and discuss God's Word.
The years from 1066-the Norman conquest of England-to 1284-the English conquest of Wales--were momentous ones in the history of Britain. In this comprehensive synthesis canvassing the peoples, economies, religion, languages, and political leadership of medieval Britain, David Carpenter weaves together the histories of England, Scotland, and Wales. Arguing that English domination of the kingdom was by no means a foregone conclusion, Carpenter analyzes the multiple struggles for mastery of Great Britain. He explains why English monarchs focused on continental landholdings more than the island of Great Britain and narrates the loss of Normandy, Anjou, and Acquitaine. He recounts how the Welsh kings strove to recover areas lost to the Normans and to assert dominion over one another, and how the kings of Scotland expanded their realm to create a united Scotland. Based on readings of primary and secondary sources, Carpenter sheds light on major highlights of the period including the Battle of Hastings, the murder of Becket, and the signing of the Magna Carta, as well as intermarriage, the feudal system, and the characters of key figures. This new interpretation is a definitive introduction to the period for general readers. The Struggle for Matery was a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for 2005.

The official records of England are the focus of this volume - their origin, their use, and what they reveal.
A Hunter's Confession tells the story of hunting in David Carpenter's life, including the reasons he once loved it and the reasons he no longer pursues it. When he was a boy, Carpenter and his father and brother would head out along the side roads and into the prairie marshlands searching for duck, grouse, and partridge. As a young man, he began skulking around the bushes with his hunting buddies and trudging through groves of larch, alpine fir, and willow in search of elk. Later, hunting became a form of therapy, a way to ward off melancholy and depression. In the end, as a result of a dramatic experience after shooting a grouse, Carpenter gave up hunting for good.Winding through this personal narrative is Carpenter's exploration of the history of hunting, subsistence hunting versus hunting for sport, trophy hunting, and the meaning of the hunt for those who have written about it most eloquently. Are wild creatures somehow our property? How is the sport hunter different from the hunter who must kill game to survive? Is there some sort of bridge that might connect aboriginal hunters to non-aboriginal hunters? Why do many hunters feel most fully alive when they
The essays cover the historical emergence of the classical system, a careful examination of key elements, character and relevance of that system and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many effects in later Indian religious history.
