An approachable critical biography of the English novelist, most famous as the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover. This book offers a concise yet comprehensive look at D. H. Lawrence's turbulent life and career. Tracing Lawrence's journey from a mining village outside Nottingham to his early death in the South of France, the book provides fresh perspectives on his major works. David Ellis covers the essential aspects of Lawrence's life and writings and presents a balanced view, steering between admirers and critics. Written in an accessible style, this book is ideal for both students new to Lawrence and readers looking to revisit one of Britain's greatest early twentieth-century writers.
A provocative and timely book that questions current thinking about diet, health and the environment. It challenges the ideas that meat is bad and five-a-day is good, and that livestock farming is causing climate change. This book comes at a time of health and environmental crises, when the public has never been more interested in these issues, yet never more confused.
A collection of Flash Fiction pieces and Short Stories that have been previously commercially published. They are all fast paced and laced with potential for future expansion. The second half of the book contains Short Stories which display a rich maturity in David's work and are imbibed with colourful descriptive language and characters.
David Ellis played by the rules. He worked hard, started a family, and set out on a straight and narrow path towards his own version of the American dream. But darker forces were at work to sabotage that dream. People within his own company were determined, because of jealousy and racism, to see him fail. He was accused without proof, fired without reason, and maligned without cause. Destroy a man's livelihood and you take away his ability to support his family. Without family, you take away his life. This is the story of one man's fight for truth, justice, and the American dream. Growing up in the inner city with a strong mother and an absent father, David eventually went to work for The Company, one of the largest rapid transit systems in the United States, serving millions of people in multiple states. For fourteen years, he worked his way up from custodian to 1st class painter, with never a black mark on his record, but when the powers that be within The Company began to resent the life he'd built for his family, steps were taken to destroy that life and show him just who was boss. This is the story of how one man went up against a giant employer, and with the help of his faith and his family, came through the fire with his soul intact.David fought Goliath, and won.

This book is an International Award winning volume, having won an award in the Readers' Favorite 2016 Book Award Contest for Inspirational Poetry Books. It is a collection of poetry spanning a variety of themes, with the dominant ones being Love & Romance, Inspiration and Philosophical musings.Life, Sex & Death represents David's first full length collection of emotional contemporary poetry that celebrates time honored themes and finds new and interesting ways to present them. His work is uplifting, sensual and at times tries to connect on some base instinct level with the reader. His style is distinctly his own yet in these pieces David evokes and echoes the playful spirit of his poetic heroes such as Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Leonard Cohen, Cecil Day-Lewis and modern musical contemporaries such as Nick Cave, The Kills, Chris Cornell, Katy Perry and even Weird Al Yankovic (yes, really!) to name but a few all feed the elective vision and vibes of his work.He aims for Life, Sex & Death to be a triumph for modern poetry, accessible to a large number of age groups (there are no swearwords/dirty language or adult erotic content in this collection) and worthy of taking pride of place on any bookshelf. Find many poems to hold dear, to treasure and light up your life today.

Positive poetry to inspire a happy life and help you to see the beauty in everyday things.
Watson's win on Jeopardy came as no surprise to those who had read Deus ex Machina sapiens. It was written largely during the 1990s, around the time that another IBM supercomputer--Deep Blue--was trouncing world chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov. The book has since been updated on a few points of detail but its primary message remains intact: the Machine is rapidly evolving as Man's rival if not replacement for the job of Steward of the Earth. Building upon the work of some of the world's greatest scientists, philosophers, and religious thinkers, and drawing particularly from developments in the computing and cognitive sciences--particularly, the field of artificial intelligence, or AI--the book reveals the evolutionary emergence of a machine that is not just intelligent but also self-conscious, emotional, and free-willed. In the 1980s and '90s you used to hear grandiose claims about AI. Machines would soon surpass humans in intelligence, it was claimed by some. The Japanese government spent a billion dollars on one project to make it happen. Well, it didn't happen, but that didn't stop the development of intelligence in machines. AI research simply went underground, and has ever since been quietly incorporated into the "ordinary" programs we use every day, without fanfare, without hype. There is still no machine that rivals Homo sapiens in overall intelligence, but today there are machines that far exceed human intellectual capacity in specific domains, from games to engineering to art, and the number of domains is growing exponentially big and exponentially fast. The disappearance of AI from front stage was good insofar as it allowed machines to develop in the right way; that is, through an evolutionary process, which is the only way for something of such complexity to develop. But it was bad insofar as we lost sight of the development of the intelligent machine. Deus brings Machina sapiens back to front stage, where it belongs. After describing the evolutionary development of intelligence in machines it goes on to describe the emotional, intellectual, and ethical attributes of what is no less than an emergent new life form. It asks the Big Question that can only be asked if you accept the very possibility of the new life form: Will it be serpent or savior? The question is answered in the book's title, which is intended to mean "God Emerging From the Intelligent Machine." The author confesses to having never studied Latin and to have concocted the title from two known Latin phrases: "Deus ex Machina" and "Homo sapiens." The concoction could be grammatically incorrect. The author would be pleased to be corrected.

1918. In the course of his work, the writer comes in contact with a large number of people who are interested in botany as a recreation and a change from their regular work. It is noteworthy with such students that interest in a plant is considerably quickened when it can be shown that the plant in question possesses either medicinal or poisonous properties. In answer to this need, the writer compiled this book which imparts useful information and at the same time emphasizes the paramount importance of scientific training.

Given the increasing number of old people, the proliferation of books about old age is hardly surprising. Most of these come from cultural historians or social scientists and, when those with a literary background have tackled the subject, they have largely done so through what are known as period studies. In Blasted with Antiquity, David Ellis provides an alternative. Skipping nimbly from Cicero to Shakespeare, and from Wordsworth to Dickens and beyond, he discusses various aspects of old age with the help of writers across European history who have usually been regarded as worth listening to. Eschewing extended literary analyses, Ellis addresses retirement, physical decay, sex in old age, the importance of family, legacy, wills and nostalgia, as well of course as dying itself. While remaining alert to current trends, his approach is consciously that of the old way of teaching English rather than the new. Whether ¿blasted with antiquity¿ like Falstaff in Henry IV Part Two, or with the ¿shining morning face¿ of an unwilling student, his accessible and witty style will appeal to young and old alike.
Featured in the New York Times for his haiku poetry that he paints on driftwood and first poetry book Beach in City Island, David Ellis has beenworking in Harlem as a teacher for almost two decades. David fell in love with Harlem the moment he entered. "I feel the souls of those that were here before I was born, especially when I walk down Lenox Avenue." Most of the poems written in this poetry book are on display at many restaurants and cafes in Harlem, hand painted on canvas and written in frames.
"In this book, David Ellis traces Lord Byron's life from rented lodgings in Aberdeen and the crumbling splendors of Newstead Abbey to his final grand tour of Asia. Describing his exile from England as well as his subsequent travels in Italy and Greece, Ellis shows just how completely Byron's experiences colored both his serious and comic writings, such as Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and The Corsair. This is a fresh, concise, and clear-eyed account of the flamboyant poet's life and work."--
Is religion growing irrelevant, even destructive? Is it failing to keep pace with a civilization and cultures changing at such speed that today's norms of behavior seem diametrically opposed to those prescribed in the unchanged and unchanging messages of ancient religion and Scripture-at least, the messages as they have long been interpreted? And what about tomorrow's norms? Why is religion not evolving in step with our accelerating understanding of the universe through science, and with the societal changes (same-sex marriage, for instance) that result? Does it misrepresent God by failing to interpret Scriptures in the cultural, social, scientific, and technological contexts of the times? Is religion ignoring the divine, sacred, and eternal values of a divine, sacred, and eternal God, in favor of worldly, profane, and ephemeral values? Some preachers (and most marketers) assure you, for instance, that you deserve everything, from washing machines to diamonds to boat cruises to feeling good about yourself. But what if you stole the diamond? What if you are a mass murderer? No matter what you are, why should you deserve to feel good about yourself?Whether you deserve to feel good about yourself or not, the feeling might bring some lukewarm joy to your allotted three score and ten. But what then? What about the eternal bliss promised thereafter by religion? They say all you have to do is to accept and follow their interpretations of God's Word. But if you start to doubt and think outside their politically and piously pristine pews and pagodas, then get ready for life outside the box when they throw you out.Why should you doubt their interpreta6ons of God's Word?-Because Scripture is not the source of specific answers about how to live life. Its-God's-real purpose is to confront you with the really important existen6al questions and show you where to turn for answers. The direction in which to turn is inwards, toward your true self.If you do this with honesty and humility, you might not feel all that good about what you discover. You will find yourself, like Jacob, wrestling with God. The struggle will be bruising and painful, but the outcome will be a win-win: A win for you in discovering your true self, and a win for God in having His beloved child home again.
