The Apocalypse is one of the most sublime and wonderful dramatic exhibitions presented for human contemplation. Internal evidence concurs with authentic history, in demonstrating to the devout and intelligent reader, its divine origin. God, angels and men, are the principal actors. Men's natural curiosity may find entertainment in this book; and from no higher principle, many have doubtless been prompted to attempt a discovery of its mysterious contents. What is true, however, of supernatural revelation in general, is equally true of this book: -"The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." To the right understanding of the Apocalypse, so far as the prophetical parts of it are contemplated, the following prerequisites would seem to be indispensable: - 1. A competent knowledge of what may be termed the fundamental doctrines of the gospel: such as the unity of the Divine Nature; the distinction of persons in the Godhead; the atonement and intercession of Christ; the total depravity and renovation of human nature; the resurrection and final retribution, etc. 2. Acquaintance with symbolical language, as the only language common to all men since the confusion of tongues. 3. Familiarity with the typical dispensation, from which most of the symbols are taken. 4. Freedom from all political bias.

The recent flashpoint of Colin Kaepernick taking a knee renews a long tradition of athlete-activists speaking out against racism, injustice, and oppression. Like Kaepernick, Jackie Robinson, Paul Robeson, Muhammad Ali, Bill Russell, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos—among many others, of all races, male and female, pro and amateur—all made the choice to take a side to command public awareness and attention rather than “shut up and play,” as O. J. Simpson, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods did. Using their celebrity to demand change, these activists inspired fans but faced great personal and professional risks in doing so. It Was Always a Choice traces the history and impact of these decisive moments throughout the history of U.S. sports.David Steele identifies the resonances and antecedents throughout the twentieth century of the choices faced by athletes in the post-Kaepernick era, including the advance of athletes’ political organizing in the era of activism following the death of George Floyd. He shows which athletes chose silence instead of action—“dropping the baton,” as it were—in the movement to end racial inequities and violence against Black Americans. The examples of courageous athletes multiply as LeBron James, Megan Rapinoe and the activist-athletes of the NBA, WNBA, and NFL remain committed to fighting daily and vibrantly for social change.
During a visit to his grandfather's grave, David O'Reilly makes an unexpected friend in someone he had never spared more than a passing glance to, sending him into a whirlwind of reality of the harsh world that awaits them. Experiencing the loss of childhood innocence in the face of adversity, the two boys merge, chased by fire, right and wrong, and are lifted up through friendship and kindness. Together, they rise from the ashes of tragedy through lessons of forgiveness, acceptance, and what it means to be a true friend.
A stimulating collection of readings, dramas and dialogue sermons that involve members of the congregation in the act of preaching.
