Traveling Without A Passport is a sequel to top selling "The Garden of What Was and Was Not." Peter Peter McCarthy, a "non-repentant hippie," continues on his adventures in disappointing later realities. The focus is now on a cataclysmic period in the mid-Seventies after Nixon. As a writer, David Stone manages to be funny as he is fierce, with an eccentric cast buffeting the fringes of American culture.
A one time admirer looks back with a skeptical eye on the claims and teachings of Abraham-Hicks. How do they stand up in a cooler light outside the high intensity workshops and slick YouTube videos? Do the teachings make sense? Why does the organization continue to pretend Jerry Hicks is alive, more than three years after his death?
Peter McCarthy looks back, from the precipice of the September 11th attacks, witnessing it firsthand, to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Both events changed America fundamentally. His story recalls what it was like to struggle with American identity and values, inventing them as others were doing as a whole new nation set its roots. Sex, love, loss, rebellion and yearning to belong propel his journey across the decades.
All his life, he wondered about a witch next door, a witch his brothers both scared him with and protected him from. When his family life collapsed in miserable divorce, he confronted his fear of the witch and found what he dreaded even more. The Witch New Door takes the reader through a hall of mirrors in which you see the story from numerous angles over sixty years.
In "Lucky To Have Her," Peter wrestles with understanding the paths his life has worn, adjusting after his wife's death. No longer protected by the buffer of a long marriage, he faces up to compromises made early and how they directed his fate. But he also reconcile what love, in all its forms, might mean, against the heated backdrop of a decades-long, risky and passionate love affair with Gail, his unconventional sister-in-law. The story unfolds as an intimate journey backwards and forward in time, jogged by a truth that can't stay hidden forever.

In The Messes I Made While You Were Waiting For Godot, Peter McCarthy brings the characters, themes and ideas he's carried through The Garden Of What Was And Was Not and Traveling Without A Passport to a conclusion of sorts. Readers of his earlier books will understand that his stories don't end anymore than those in real life do. In The Messes I Made While You Were Waiting For Godot, he rounds it all up and puts it away for a while. Peter McCarthy discovers that his entire life, everything, the loves, the messes, the successes, the work, the friends, all of it, takes place during three days spent crossing America on a Greyhound Senicruiser in 1976. He meets Marcie and, in the reflection of a quirky romance, sees decades in enigmatic spirals in either direction. As usual, Peter is funny, passionate, confused, perplexing, cynical, optimistic and never bored in The Messes I Made While You Were Waiting For Godot, the last book in The Autobiography Of X series.
Fusible Links is the story of love found and lost, of the struggles of a generation scarred by the assassination of John F. Kennedy, not yet set free by the rise of the counterculture. In a dark period seldom examined, a sort of lost valley, Peter McCarthy comes to grips with an America his generation never imagined.
Have you ever pondered the lowest point in Western Civilization? In this novel, Peter McCarthy, first person narrator of three previous books, proposes one, and it's alarmingly close to now. McCarthy also explains why being born with a calling may be the worst thing that can happen. In a single, fast moving paragraph, he capsulizes three-thousand years of human history. He turns to the subject that has kept him wondering for decades - the mystery of why we love and are loved. Why does love usually fail to last, no matter how certain we are in the first gust of passion? New readers as well as established fans will provoked to think again about what seems so clear. Everyone will find a story that will stay with them and inform them.
It's 1975. The Bicentennial of a country in turmoil edges toward the horizon, and Peter McCarthy has extended a thread started in the the hippie counterculture as far as it can be stretched. The shallow identity he patched together to survive within straight culture can't hold up. He throws all he has away to try starting over as the optimistic, freedom loving, happy go lucky character he once was, assuming he can still be found. Disasters ensue. His marriage collapses, his job becomes too preposterous to continue, his love life extends in too many directions to survive, and he surrounds himself with characters who will stick with you and make you laugh long after the last page is turned.Peter finally hits that wall. He lets you enjoy the passions, frustrations and fun of getting there and hope for redemption that follows.
A single life gets built from year after year of taking on the reality you wake up to every morning, bigger in retrospect that it ever seemed in real time. You marry, get educated, have children and careers, and each component is thickly populated with countless lesser worlds of connection. Salt this with emotions carried throughout, and you've got far more than any multi-volume biography could contain. Unless life has meaning, why would find the energy to go through all that? And if it does have meaning, where does that come from? Is there a newer story to be told that puts our lives in a meaningful, yet believable context?
"A Million Different Things" is a series of short, related essays (We call them meditations.) on the subject of learning to be happy and staying that way. Happiness itself is an idea unique to each of us, and this book talks about discovering the practices that can make it happen for anyone. David Stone tells the story of growing from an intense investigator about "what makes reality real... or not" to a practitioner who learned that knowledge is worth little unless it leads us deeper into the surprising world most never recognize around them. The book includes practical steps taken from real life experiences and shows how easy and pleasurable it can be for anyone to understand what happiness may be for them and how to get there fast. Just as importantly, the author explains in detail the habits that prevent personal fulfillment and how they got there. He explains his discovery that joy is supposed to be easy and how to let it be so. Readers see this as a how-to manual on becoming a dreaded "morning person," one of those people waking up each morning full of optimism driven by personal insight and playful practice.
On the day I came home from the war - a phrase still tossed around like iceberg lettuce in the cultural salad, in spite of its saturation - the shock was not unexpected. Both the country that sent me and a million others into battle across the Pacific and the warrior lucky enough to live through it had changed clothes. I'd been at least as dizzied when I tumbled head-last into boot camp and, again, when I struggled to get my bearings on the ground in Southeast Asia. This was 1970, a new decade in a country rubbed so raw by the last one you couldn't drag it in front of a mirror and expect to see the same image twice. What once was bright and sure scrambled into confused and angry...

Jerry and Esther Hicks, carried on the shoulders of Abraham and the Law of Attraction, swept up thousands of followers, publishing books and selling out workshops where they presented "The Teachings of Abraham." Tangled up in Abraham Hicks tells the story of being caught up in the enthusiasm and finding a way back out when the wheels came off Jerry and Esther's "Rock Star Monster Bus." Read about the contradictions, false lessons and greed that poisoned a once rewarding pursuit of happiness.
One winter morning as wind threw rain against my window, I got an internal push to write a something I never thought I would, a nonfiction book Not just that, I got a general picture of how it would go - including the word count which turned out to be exactly right, weeks later. The subject, revelations that somehow come from meditating every day, was utterly new to me. I'm tempted to say I tapped into something, but the truth is something else. It was more like, "Get out of the way. I want to get at that keyboard." Something, some inner conscious awareness, got ahold of me. For weeks, I sat down every morning and pounded out the ideas that were given to me. Sometimes, I even laughed out loud at the sheer fun of it. I learned to pay less attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling because it slowed up the flood of insights. I could always edit later. Funny thing was, when I went back to edit, I read things that I not only did not remember, but had never thought about before, to my knowledge. It was great privilege I was honored to receive as a gift. I can only hope you're able to share some of my excitement and joy. As a gift, I hope it's also just right for you.
