How does a scrawny kid who despises swimming-especially in the bitterly cold waters of the Pacific Ocean during the month of March-become one of a handful of aquatic athletes selected to become an ocean lifeguard for his coastal town in Southern California? For Dave Wagner, protecting the lives of swimmers and surfers was already a family tradition, starting with his father and carried on by his two older brothers, sister, and twin brother. The pressure was on! With the Wagner family comprising, at one point, roughly 10% of the Oceanside Lifeguard Agency, Dave is uniquely qualified to share these real-life stories of danger and heroism from his over three decades of ensuring the safety of ocean beachgoers, both in and out of the water. The first hand rescues described by the author, a few of which unfortunately end in tragedy, are a gripping portrayal of how beach lifeguards regularly put their lives on the line to save the lives of others. The job requires physical ability, courage, endurance, and altruism, but most of all, respect for the tremendous power and unpredictability of the ocean. Follow Dave, and at times his brothers, as he relates true life-and- death encounters from the top of the lifeguard tower. It may forever change the way you think about your next trip to the beach...
When mean Canadian geese take over a small pond in the Bluegrass State, a young duck must search for a new home in the big, beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky.

"When an old college friend leading a religious tour in Assisi asks interpreter Rick Montoya to fill in for their guide who's gone missing, Rick is happy to oblige. He's looking forward to seeing his old friend, and the food and wine of Umbria sound like the perfect reward for a tense translation job he's just completed for the police in Palermo involving witness testimony against the mafia. But when the shady tour guide is found dead the next morning under suspicious circumstances, Rick's relaxing gig turns into an unofficial job assisting the local police inspector with her interviews of the tour group members. Could one of the pious pilgrims be a cold-blooded killer? Or has one of the victim's many shady dealings finally caught up with him?"--
You know what you can't stop? Progress. Parker Duque had everything, a trust fund, fake ambition, and a beautiful girlfriend. Then he lost it all. Would this rich kid sink or swim? When we catch up with the former trust-funder, Parker had, against all odds, become a self-made man. After years and years of hard work, he's just banked a modest fortune selling out to his partners. The euphoria wouldn't last though. The same day his "Big Deal" closes, Parker discovers his wife's been cheating on him and the world's about to be blown in two. By aliens(?). Can you imagine what it must be like to have everything, lose everything, then build it back yourself through years and years of hard work, only to lose it all again? To aliens? It was hard for Parker too. With only a week (or two) left, would Parker Duque save the world?"F*** that." Parker Duque was a realist. There were a number of things Parker wanted to do with his last two weeks alive, and trying to save the planet wasn't one of them. First things first, Parker had to escape Dusty and Peaches, an odd pair of CIA agents on an end of the world mission (this time for sure).Peaches, despite her morbid obesity, was an accomplished hitwoman with impossible athleticism, and Dusty, despite his small stature, had a vise-like grip and moved through the shadows like a gazelle. A tiny gazelle. Parker knew the quick-tempered little man and the largest woman he'd ever seen in comfort shoes would prove a formidable duo...Can Parker Escape? What will he do if he does? Is it really the end of the world? Buckle up, it's a wild and hilarious ride the entire way through...
This book uniquely explores the rare event of poor people who become nationally or internationally famous. This book describe how poverty is a severe disability that stunts areas of growth and opportunity among children. Nevertheless, using a sample of 27 people including Charlie Chaplin, Billie Holiday, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Pryor, Babe Ruth, Oprah Winfrey, and Malcolm X, the book shows how these figures both coped, but faced life-long challenges as a result of their backgrounds.
This is the first history of the three progressive movements in the twentieth and twentieth-first century: The original Progressives primarily in the first two decades of the twentieth century; the Popular Front progressives of the 1930s and 1940s; and recent progressives in the Democratic Party from Jesse Jackson to Bernie Sanders. Although characterized by much rhetoric, none of these movements have broken out of the reformist bounds of liberalism. The book describes the very limited outcomes of the progressive movements.
This is a first-time study of formerly homeless people showing how people become and then leave the state of homelessness. Using a sample of people from across the nation and of different sexes, races, and ethnicities, Wagner suggests the key variables in ending homelessness for individuals as well ascommunities.
Rick Montoya, eager to experience more of his Italian mother's culture, heads to Rome to start his own translation business. He's armed with curiosity and an appetite for local food and wine. Rick's maternal uncle is a Roman cop with one eye to his nephew's welfare and another to how Rick might be useful, perhaps widen his career choices. So Commissario Piero Fontana pulls Rick into an investigation: the murder of Count Umberto Zimbardi. The wealthy count enjoyed indulging a circle of convivial friends and a hobby collecting oral histories by interviewing residents in the city's centro storico. After heading home from such an afternoon, he was found dead on a bridge over the Tiber. As a newcomer and an investigator, Rick makes rookie mistakes. He's learning the ropes as an amateur sleuth and that living in Rome is different from visiting. Plus he's distracted by a woman pressing him into service as a tour guide and the arrival of a college friend on a mission to sell Argentine wine to the Vatican. In Roman Count Down, the city emerges as another character in David Wagner's "...usual deft mix of travel and suspense" (Kirkus Reviews). Like all the Rick Montoya Mysteries, this prequel is rich in food, drink, and local culture and landmarks.

Rick Montoya, an American translator travelling through Italy, tries to spend his days reveling in art but soon finds himself wrapped up in a scandalWrapping up an interpreter job in Bassano del Grappa at a conference on artist Jacopo da Bassano, Rick Montoya looks forward to exploring the town. And it would be fun to look into the history of two long-missing paintings by the master, a topic that caused the only dust-up among the normally staid group of international scholars attending the seminar.Bassano has much to offer to Rick the tourist, starting with its famous covered bridge, an ancient castle, and several picturesque walled towns within striking distance. He also plans to savor a local cuisine that combines the best of Venice with dishes from the Po Valley and the surrounding mountains. These plans come to a sudden halt when one of the seminar's professors turns up dead. Rick is once again drawn into a murder mystery, this time with a pair of local cops who personify the best and the worst of the Italian police force. At the same time he's willingly pulled into a relationship with Betta Innocenti, the daughter of a local gallery owner, who is equally intrigued by the lost paintings. They quickly realize that the very people who might know the story are also the main suspects in the murder--and that someone not above resorting to violence is watching their every move.In David P. Wagner's signature style, Murder Most Unfortunate offers a thrilling investigation while allowing you to enjoy the food, drink, and culture of Italy without traveling yourself.Other books in the Rick Montoya Italian Mysteries: Cold Tuscan StoneDeath in the DolomitesMurder Most UnfortunateReturn to UmbriaA Funeral in Mantova

Examines the life of homeless and ex homeless people in relation to family, workplace, and government as well as interactions in the community itself and subgroups within it.
The author compares the current "temperance "movements (against drugs, smoking, alcohol, teen pregnancy, pornography, fatty foods, and even politically incorrect language) with similar movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The book addresses why the new campaigns emerged after the supposed freer days of the 1960s, and why these issues are popular in America.
