The work describes the renewable energy resources of Georgia quantitatively and qualitatively in country and regional contexts. It is mentioned that Georgia is rich in this regard and in some degree it fills the lack of fuel resources (oil, natural gas) in the country. In particular, it comes 3.27 MM.kW.h energy of river surface runoffs on each square kilometer of the territory. As a southern country, Georgia is located in so-called ¿World Solar Zone¿ and the annual sunshine exceeds 250 days while wind energy supplies in separate zones exceed 4.5 B.kW.h annually. The country is also rich with underground thermal waters. In the present work it is also given an assessment of the use of renewable energy resources. In this regard, it is a better situation with the use of hydro power resources. However, according to 2016 year data, Georgian HPPs worked out only 11.4% of their technical capacity and 23.6% of their economic potential. It is discussed the energy use of solar, wind and thermal waters at the initial stage. There are formulated suggestions for improving the use of these resources, including in terms of legal regulations.

This book implies the problems of the development of Georgian energy sector. Georgia is one of the oldest countries in the world, which is not well-known for the new generation of foreign people and therefore it could be discovery for them. The above mentioned refers to energy sector as well. Our country has a big potential and is very attractive for investors. However, existing situation is still unenviable. This paper comprises two parts. In the first section the implemented reforms and achievements as well as existing challenges of Georgian energy sector are discussed from modern and historical perspective. Paper is focused on one of the key acute issues such as energy balance, level of electrification and gasification, utilization of energy resources, energy efficiency, environment and regulation of sector. The second section envisages the essential issues and activities necessary for the development of Georgian energy sector, in particular, energy security, optimization of energy balance, establishment of competitive energy market, energy saving, environment protection and external cooperation. Justified opinions and proposals needed for the development of energy regulation.
