... C'est comme juré animé de ce double sentiment que M. Mignet déclare Marie Stuart coupable de complicité dans le meurtre de Darnley, son mari. Son amour de la vérité, sa conscience d'historien ont dicté la sentence; mais la sympathie pour la misère humaine a inspiré le noble récit où il en retrace les motifs. Il plaint en même temps qu'il condamne; en dénonçant le crime, il pense à sa longue et douloureuse expiation, et, s'il met la main sur son coeur en prononçant l'arrêt, c'est moins pour le prendre à témoin qu'il croit Marie coupable que pour contenir la douleur qu'il éprouve à ne pouvoir l'absoudre. Enfin il ne fait pas entrer dans le récit toutes les preuves, et plus d'une est rejetée aux notes, qui ne laisse pas d'avoir beaucoup de force. L'art le voulait ainsi, je le sais, et M. Mignet y est passé maître. Il n'y avait pas de risque qu'entre ses mains l'histoire dégénérât en une discussion au criminel; mais je vois dans sa discrétion encore plus de délicatesse que d'art. M. Mignet veut bien faire les affaires de la vérité, il ne veut pas triompher d'une femme infortunée, et, tout en restant doux au malheur, il a su être plus concluant contre Marie Stuart que certains écrivains de parti qui semblent la poursuivre avec la haine fanatique de Knox ou l'ingratitude de Buchanan...
