Veráse una guerra, al parecer tenida en poco, y liviana dentro en casa; mas fuera estimada y de gran coyuntura, que en cuanto duró tuvo atentos, y no sin esperanza, los ánimos de príncipes amigos y enemigos. [...] En fin, pelearse cada día con enemigos, frío, calor, hambre, falta de municiones, de aparejos en todas partes, daños nuevos, muertes a la continua; hasta que vimos a los enemigos, nación belicosa, entera, armada, y confiada en el sitio, en el favor de los bárbaros y turcos, vencida, rendida, sacada de su tierra, y desposeída de sus casas y bienes; presos, y atados hombres y mujeres; niños cautivos vendidos en almoneda o llevados a habitar a tierras lejos de la suya [...]. Victoria dudosa, y de sucesos tan peligrosos, que alguna vez se tuvo duda si éramos nosotros o los enemigos, los a quien Dios quería castigar: hasta que el fin de ella descubrió, que nosotros éramos los amenazados, y ellos los castigados. Tras la conquista de Granada en 1492, la población musulmana quedó sometida al dominio cristiano como categoría social antes llamada mudéjares y ahora moriscos. Pronto los moriscos comenzaron a ser reprimidos con firmeza. El descontento dio lugar a motines y, finalmente, a una rebelión, la llamada Guerra de Granada, (1568-1571). Hurtado de Mendoza, participante en la contienda, relata dicha guerra a la manera de la mejor tradición clásica, con estilo conciso, ideas profundas, digresiones eruditas, objetividad, incluso críticas a los abusos de su propio partido. Una obra maestra de la historiografía renacentista española.

1568, víspera de Navidad, Granada. Los moriscos se alzan en armas, la violencia inunda las Alpujarras y se extiende por los valles y las costas del sureste de la península ibérica. Esperan que les llegue el apoyo de los otomanos. La escuadra turca se mueve por el Mediterráneo con total impunidad. Turcos y berberiscos asolan la costa del Levante y del sur de la península, llevando miles de cautivos al norte de África. Las Baleares sufran continuas rapiñas, Formentera ha quedado deshabitada. Hay zonas de la costa habitadas sólo por moriscos, que facilitan ayuda a los saqueadores. Los moriscos esperan la restauración de Al Andalus y están dispuestos a llegar hasta el final.

Pocas son las paginas de esta preciosa novela pero en todas ellas rebosa la gracia y ostenta sus galas la rica lengua castellana. Los caracteres estan delineados de mano maestra, las descripciones ofrecen brillantisimos toques y basta un conocimiento superficial de aquella epoca para comprender toda la verdad de semejantes cuadros y tipos arrancados a la vida real; Lazaro muchachuelo despierto y de agudisimo ingenio, pero condenado a servidumbre por su pobreza, refiere con gracia inimitable la odisea de sus, ya tristes, ya burlescas aventuras, sufriendo bajo el poder de un ciego, maestro en toda clase de astucias, de un clerigo miserable y de un hidalgo, tan vanidoso como escaso de recursos, tipos todos muy corrientes en aquel tiempo. El animo mas hipocondriaco no puede defenderse de la risa al leer las ingeniosas invenciones del malaventurado Lazarillo para burlar la astucia y sagacidad del ciego y la miserable vigilancia del clerizonte. Esto explica la boga extraordinaria que llego a alcanzar este libro del que se hicieron en breve numerosas ediciones en todas las lenguas extranjeras, siendo dificil averiguar las que se han hecho en lengua castellana. Aun cuando la segunda parte es inferior a la primera tanto por la invencion, como por la pintura de los personajes, descripcion de los cuadros y pureza del estilo hemos creido conveniente, no separarla de la primera, pues ambas figuran juntas en gran numero de ediciones. Abrigamos el convencimiento de que los lectores no podran menos de recorrer con el mayor gusto y deleite las paginas brillantes de esta preciosa novela en que se ostenta en toda su galanura el ingenio de Mendoza por un lado, y por otro la gallardia de la lengua castellana.
