Ebbe una vita travagliata segnata da ripetuti internamenti in manicomio. Tra il 1912 e il 1913 frequentò i gruppi di goliardi e alcuni appassionati di letteratura. Fu proprio su fogli pubblicati dai goliardi bolognesi che uscirono le sue prime poesie: quattro testi che vennero poi, una volta rielaborati, inclusi nei "Canti Orfici" (1914), opera unica dell'autore, chiamata così in riferimento alla figura mitologica di Orfeo, il primo poeta-musicista.

Campana was the wild man of Italian poetry in 1914, on the eve of World War I. The war saved some young Italians from rebellion and from Fascism, but not Campana. Always an outsider, he was a vagabond who worked now and then as a gaucho, miner, fireman, organ-grinder, janitor, circus tumbler, horse groomer, and a wandering musician with a Gypsy band.
