Significant pressures on biodiversity on rangelands; depressed net incomes, land use conversion, fire suppression, invasion by woody and alien species, grazing pressure by domestic livestock, residential and industrial developments, urbanization, agriculture, mining, industrialization, road construction, linear developments such as roads and pipelines as well as climate change, and these threats are for practical purposes, irreversible. The study examined the status, pattern of distribution of plant resources, as well as the range condition and trend. It also investigated the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents and threats to rangeland resources in the study areas. Records of the herbaceous plant species in this study showed that Gongoshi had 94 species while Guyaku and Chekelek had 88 and 70 species respectively. The total number of woody plant species on each site was 22 for Gongoshi, 20 for Guyaku and 17 for Chekelek range sites. This book is targeted at developing strategies for rangeland utilisers who see the act and a serious business venture. It will be beneficial to researchers, the government and individuals who will used it as a guide for range development.
This Book presented the socio-economic characteristics of some Pastoralists and threats to rangeland resources of Adamawa State. Range site representatives (Gongoshi, Guyaku and Chelekek range sites) of the two agro-ecological zones (Guinea and Sudan savanna) in the State were selected and delineated. Results of the socio-economic characteristics indicated that illiteracy level was 83.8%, excluding the range managers. The respondents other than the range managers are pastoralists and transhumance in nature. Results of respondents¿ income range from N 500.00 - N 20,000.00 weekly. The threats with the highest severity indices are over-exploitation of forage resources, conflicts, invasion by undesirable plant species, drought, diseases and pests. Others are settlement policy, population increase, bush fire and rangeland policy. The study recommends that adequate policy and institutional arrangements be put in place by governments at all levels for the proper management and conservation of Adamawa rangelands.
A range is a broad, wide and unfenced area on which animals graze and roam. They comprise the low rainfall and variable climate, arid and semi-arid areas and, north of the Tropic of Capricorn and some seasonally high rainfall areas. The main ecosystem types are shrublands, native grasslands and woodlands. Boundaries to rangelands are not clearly defined; they vary according to variation in climatic condition. Rangelands are homes to a significant number of species of animals and plants with a high value in both scientific terms and leisure. The literature uses several terms for the main world¿s rangelands: South American savanna, African savanna, Eurasian steppe, Indian savanna, Australian grasslands and North American prairies. It is a broader term than grasslands, encompassing areas where woody vegetation is dominant; moreover, it is a term common in texts looking at land from the viewpoint of livestock production.
