The suspense quickens in The End of Democracy, Don Carroll's exciting sequel to his first novel, Hacking Toward Consciousness and the second installment in The Consciousness Trilogy. Will Dawson is on the run from the CIA, his former employer, which hopes he will lead them to the elusive Melissa Dowling. Secret research on psychic development is being conducted in Antarctica. A young Navajo named Manuelito and his dog Ooljee have their own intuitive gifts to share. Ex-hacker Blaine Astrid's journey toward healing and wholeness deepens as she finds friendship with Aasia, a refugee from the Srebrenica genocide, and private eye Gordon Slade has a case of love for Joy the librarian. As these captivating characters follow their hearts to greater consciousness and a deeper understanding of their world-with a few words from the wise and a bit of quantum field theory to shed light on why dualistic democracy is destined for failure-love and mystery entwine to show us all the possibilities for transformation. Carroll proves again he is a master of inspiration and insight with a wonderfully original story not to be missed.

One day, Davey is a post-modern hunter gatherer criss-crossing the reservation on his vintage Indian motorcycle foraging for cheap liquor and soup kitchen hand-outs, a Vietnam vet with undiagnosed PTSD, whose life is fated to go no where. A few months later, after a blood vessel explodes in the left side of his brain, Davey finds himself in a Convent in northern Sweden where a group of dedicated women are trying to understand the nature of consciousness in order to save the planet. They want to answer the question of whether visionary experiences may help set up the brain's biological platform for awakened consciousness. Led by an indomitable mother superior, Mother Mary, they are seeking the answer to this question through their own consciousness practices and through experiencing the visionary experiences of several extraordinary Beguines. As the novel unfolds we learn the Beguines are the forgotten women of the first women's liberation movement. They began to form communities in the early Middle Ages to have a protected space to pursue their emotional and spiritual journeys outside of male authority. Through modern technology Mother Mary's band of consciousness explorers seek to go back into Dark Age times to see what happened in the consciousnesses of several prominent Beguines, including Christina the Astonishing and Marguerite Porete, who was burned at the stake in Paris by the Inquisition in 1310 because she would not recant her mystical experiences. The CIA is intent on finding out what Mother Mary's group of consciousness explorers are up to. What is at stake they believe is knowledge of how to become enlightened-knowledge they fear will fall into the hands of a terrorist chieftain or the head of a rogue state. If being pursued by the CIA is not enough the Convent is also at odds with the Vatican bank. The seekers in the novel strive to side-step these ominous power-players, while the intensity of their small community throws them into the profoundly human dilemma of needing to understand the meaning of love. The Beguines and the Search for Visionary Consciousness is a novel of adventure, of characters navigating the power pitfalls of our culture, and most daringly a novel of ideas where readers, should they choose to, have the chance to encounter the meaning of love and consciousness in their own lives. Don Carroll is the author of King Arthur and the Consciousness Gene: How Truth Uses Deception and Illusion Masquerades as Truth. He also authored The Consciousness Trilogy: Hacking Toward Consciousness, The End of Democracy and The Armageddon Choice. In addition, he is the author of works of non-fiction, including The 9 & 12 Workbook and A Lawyer's Guide to Healing. More information is available at www.doncarroll.com.

Is there a map for the spiritual journey to greater consciousness? If so, how do we find it? And if there is such a map, we see why Melissa Dowling, who may have inadvertently stumbled onto an experience of the map as a Peace Corp volunteer in Afghanistan, is suddenly caught up in a high stakes game where her survival hangs in the balance. But how will such a map be helpful to anyone who is not committed to the disciplined work of evolving their consciousness? Even if they are committed to disciplined practices, is greater consciousness only a matter of practice and dedication or is it also something touched by that illusive quality known as Grace? If greater consciousness is simply a well honed technique available to any interested party, what happens when it becomes an asset for those working as professional spies? None of these questions can be answered without human characters struggling to understand the nature of consciousness in their own lives. And these characters inevitably are pulled deeper into the mystery of facing more questions such as whether or not achieving greater consciousness is something more than a matter of individual pursuit? Is it possible that greater consciousness inherently involves something larger than a single person's consciousness, such as that of a monastic order or a nation? Is the earth as a meta-organism itself on a path toward greater consciousness? And is consciousness, whether manifest individually or collectively, a benign power or may it be utilized to control how people think and to promote and protect powerful moneyed interests? Gordon Slade is a private eye on a case with a cagey client. Blaine Astrid is a computer hacker and research assistant for a professor seeking the latest in biblical scholarship. William Dawson, a former CIA agent, is searching for his lost love whose valuable psychic abilities may have caused her disappearance. Father Charles "Cloudy" Hay, whose knowledge of the human soul makes him wary of the power of his own authority, struggles to lead from behind. Godfrey Adams, a gay man and an everyman, whose life has reached the place where his goals have largely been accomplished, is gloomy and depressed. He seeks spiritual direction to find himself and is not only pulled into a greater connection with life but also into increased questioning and uncertainty internally and into external events that come chaotically careening his way. The lives of these characters collide with daring conclusions, as they enter the uncharted frontiers of these questions about consciousness, all the while exploring hidden scriptures, biblical conundrums, and the Enneagram of Jesus. The vulnerability and longings of these characters in their search for truth and intimacy mirror our own yearnings and suspicions in a post-millennial age of technology. Written with sensitivity and wisdom, Hacking Toward Consciousness is a provocative perspective on the possibility of faith in our time and the possibility of following a hidden-in-plain-view map for evolving that matrix of human and divine wisdom that is called consciousness.

In King Arthur and The Consciousness Gene, Don Carroll's fourth novel, we find some of the most beloved characters from his earlier novels in The Consciousness Trilogy, including Rat, Manuelito, and Blaine. Through intense spiritual practices Blaine develops the ability to go back in time to observe events occurring centuries ago. She is persuaded by Mother Mary of the Sacred Order of the Sisters of Mary Magdala to return to King Arthur's time to seek evidence to confirm that in him a gene was expressed, which allows humans to develop a higher level of consciousness. Blaine finds herself in a race against time, and the CIA who are on their own quest to find the secret. Blaine arrives at the time of Arthur in the reflective consciousness of a young woman named Gwenynen. Arthur is in the midst of his many battles to protect Britian, is seriously wounded. Gwenynen travels with Arthur to the mythical island of Avalon-the very real Ynys Enlli, off the coast of Wales-and learns the Celtic prince is not only a warrior-king, but also a man of deep faith who uniquely blends Celtic and Roman Christianity. As this epic tale unfolds, the reader is plunged ever deeper into new ideas about the meanings and mechanisms of consciousness. Ultimately, the story of King Arthur is the story of each of our journeys into the unexpected and unavoidable discovery of how truth uses deception, and how illusion masquerades as truth.
