The life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ represent the core-the roots-of authentic Christian theology and worship. Similarly, the taproots of the Church are found in the primary truths of Christian faith in the biblical writings of the apostles, articulated by the Fathers, and expressed in the teaching and practice of the ancient Church. These roots are sacred; in them we come to know God's story of love in Christ and by faith make that story (his-story) our own. This seminar will outline the ways in which churches can renew its spirituality and mission by inhabiting the Story of God in Scripture expressed in the Great Tradition. Special focus highlights the promise of this rediscovery for the contemporary urban church's worship, discipleship, and mission.
God's chosen and preferred method of transformation is to call and equip those who make themselves unconditionally available to him in order to accomplish his will. TUMI mentors play a significant role in aiding this cause, helping to recruit, train, and deploy urban men and women for effective urban ministry. This manual lays out the foundational principles and critical responsibilities that any mentor needs to facilitate learning with students, from planning classes to offering students counsel.

The Vision for Discipleship Seminar is the Urban Ministry Institute's attempt to raise up a new generation of qualified spiritual laborers who will catch the passion to invest in others for the sake of the Church and Christ's Kingdom. This handbook represents the text that guides the dialogues among the Seminar's participants. These spirited and challenging sessions are designed to confront the learners with the call of our Lord to be and to make disciples, to embrace a life lived for Christ and his church, and to join forces with World Impact to see revival come to the inner cities of America and the world. Let this Vision for Discipleship Seminar guidebook help you discover the process and mindset to share your life with others in such a way that real fruit will be borne for Christ-fruit that lasts.
By attempting to renew interest in the theological ethics of Martin Luther King, Jr., this book does not suggest a simplistic return to a traditional reading of King, but rather a reading that reveals some of the quiet genius with which King held together both a concern for the struggle of Black Americans for dignity and justice and a concern for human beings. While Black life in America is the historical outworking of the experience of the descendants of African slaves on this continent, it is also and simultaneously the experience of human beings who are seeking to affirm their worth in contexts that make this extremely difficult. A fresh and critical rediscovery of King's thought can provide Black theologians and ethicists with the outlines of a model for integrating a particularistic view with a universalistic and global perspective.

In this workshop, "Marking Time: Forming Spirituality through the Christian Year," we explore the origins and meaning of the Christian year, and how it represents the profound yet simple remembrance and re-enactment of the life of Christ in real time during the calendar year. Beginning with an overview of the Bible's teaching in connection to time and history, we will examine the dominant view of the atonement, Christus Victor, which reigned in the ancient Church for a 1,000 years, and how this dynamic vision of Jesus' victory over sin and death was captured in the worship of the Church in the Church Year.
Without question, the most important resource in the development of Christian discipleship and pastoral leadership is a mastery of the sacred Scriptures. The Apostle Paul asserted that not only were the Scriptures "breathed out" by God (making them utterly unique to all other literature), but that they were "profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work," 2 Tim. 3:16b-17 (ESV). A mastery of the Bible and its message is critical to every phase of effective urban ministry, and the ability to help others master the Bible is essential to preparing the saints for the work of the ministry (Eph. 4.12). Convinced that Scripture memorization is one of the most efficient and effective means of Bible mastery, we created The Master the Bible System to help develop this discipline in the lives of believers from new converts to Christian leaders. This system is specifically designed to help not only the new believer but also the developing urban disciple to gain a mastery the Bible's central message, texts, doctrines, and themes with a focus on Scripture memorization. Each series highlights a critical theme for Christian growth and spiritual formation, each uniquely enabling the growing Christian to strive toward full maturity in Christ through study, Scripture memorization, and daily meditation upon the Bible's key doctrines, its central story line, the life of Christ, and the disciplines of spiritual growth.

Mastering the OT Witness to Christ-Jesus is the key to interpreting and understanding the Bible. In understanding the whole of the story of God, we need basic but key principles in interpreting the Scriptures. In this workshop we will examine the centrality of Christ in the OT, and how he is the complete fulfillment of every system, sacrifice, covenant and prophecy. We discuss the implications of this understanding for doing ministry in the church and city and how it can effectively help us preach and teach the OT with clarity and power.
The essence of mission is to be engulfed with the flame, the love that our Father displayed for His lost world, Christ proved in His death on the cross, and the apostles demonstrated as they went to the ends of the earth with the Gospel. This course was designed to identify and explore the various dimensions of an apostolic vision that enables God's man or woman to invest strategically in winning souls to Christ, to make disciples of those who respond, and pioneer new fields for the Lord. This course examines those specific biblical insights, commitments, and values that enabled the apostles literally to "turn the world upside down." Topics include such major themes as the extreme urgency of this present hour, the inevitability of divine judgment, the absolute power of the Gospel, the integrity of the call to make disciples, the ripeness of the fields for harvest, the certainty of God's accountability on our lives to fulfill the Great Commission, and God's universal offer of grace to all humankind.
In this workshop we will seek to understand, recognize and acknowledge the personal call of God, examining the dynamics of that call as we look at the gifting, authority and opportunities he provides. We will discuss issues and questions in living out the call of God and explore implications for doing ministry in the church in the city. This course is a must have resource for those considering the call of God in their and others's lives!
Is it possible to see God move in dramatic fashion in the inner city? This study considers the factors and forces connected to the amazing phenomenon of church planting movements taking place throughout the world today. We also explore the implications of these factors for multiplying churches in today's inner cities. At a time when our definitions of the Church have become more and more individualized, this study analyzes church plant and growth theories as they relate to the more communal Nicene-based marks of church life. Using these marks as the basis for a more biblical view of the church, this study discusses and investigates the connection between church planting, world evangelization, church growth, leadership development, and urban mission. It clearly identifies the underlying principles which have contributed to the explosive multiplication of churches in places like India, Latin America, and China, and proposes the possibility of similar movements of revival, renewal, and reproduction among the poor in American cities. A landmark study, our aim is to isolate those critical dimensions of spiritual vitality which God might use to ignite explosive, dynamic, and reproducing movements of churches among the poorest communities around the world, and here at home.
For more than forty years World Impact, an inner-city missions organization, has sought to declare in word and deed the love of Christ with our neighbors in the cities of America. After beginning with Bible clubs and children's ministry (the mid 60s to early 70s), we shifted to a discipleship focus on teens (mid 70s to early 80s), then to the formation of compassion and justice ministries (early 80s), with early Christian gatherings (mid to late 80s), and finally to indigenous church planting (since 1990). Our formal announcement over twenty-five years ago to plant self-governing, self-supporting, and self-reproducing indigenous churches among the city's disadvantaged put us on a course to empower the broken, develop urban leaders, and now, participate in global mission among the urban poor. This two-volume set is an anthology of much of our research, dialogue, and insight gleaned over the past two decades. It is a comprehensive collection of diverse materials, covering numerous topics and issues, all designed to help you better understand the theological, missiological, cultural, and anthropological roots of valid church planting work in the city. For those interested in church planting among the city's neediest population, this set is an absolute must.

The Christian faith is anchored on the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, whose incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection forever changed the world. Between the years 100 and 500 C.E. those who believed in him grew from a small persecuted minority to a strong aggressive movement reaching far beyond the bounds of the Roman empire. The roots this era produced gave us our canon (the Scriptures), our worship, and our conviction (the major creeds of the Church, and the central tenets of the Faith, especially regarding the doctrine of the Trinity and Christ). This book suggests how we can renew our contemporary faith again, by rediscovering these roots, our Sacred Roots, by retrieving the Great Tradition of the Church that launched the Christian revolution.
