Freemasons contributed to America and the state of Alabama through their patriotic service and philanthropic work since 1811, but little is known about their backgrounds. Utilizing the bonds of their fraternity, but without fanfare, the freemasons built schools, orphanages, nursing homes, provided for the sick and elderly, fought wars, and were an integral part in building the state of Alabama and our country. They were, simply put, 'the epitome of good patriots and citizens.'As wife of one of the Grand Masters, Donna R. Causey, had the unique opportunity to work with Alabama's Grand Lodge to provide biographical data into the lives and backgrounds of all the Grand Masters of Freemasonry in Alabama from 1811 to 2011. Many early photographs of the Grand Masters are included in this work.Biographies of the following men are included listed in order of their service: THOMAS WADSWORTH FARRAR, WILLIAM B. New 2nd edition - re-edited and revised in 2016Inspired by actual people and historical events, Mary and Henry Pattenden flee to America to escape religious persecution - Will a special gift from her parents provide all Mary needs to face life in a new world? The Pattenden's inspiring story begins in 17th century England during the reign of Charles I and continues with their journey to the eastern shore of Virginia where they experience joy, tragedy and loss.Coming from diverse cultural backgrounds and separated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay, the real world of the settlers of "The Kingdom of Accawmacke" is revealed and secrets about America's history are discovered in this well-researched novel. Actual court records dating back to the early 1630s create historical accuracy as the reader is taken back to the primitive days of colonial America where the Pattendens encounter life-changing difficulties with Indians, ducking stools, illness, massacres, death, loneliness, love, and greed."We're all going to die!" echoed from below deck amid the frenzied screams and cries from terrified women and children between decks. Sounds of chaos below deck filled the air as the hands scrambled to free the foremast before it broke through the ship. "Quickly, men" We need to free that fore-mast now!" bellowed Captain Potts. "But, by God be careful, we don't want to lose another man!"REVIEW FROM READER: Ribbon of Love is a wonderful love story of Henry and Mary living and struggling to succeed as one of the first families in the colony of Virginia in the 1600s. In addition to the love story, the descriptions of the clothing, home furnishings, personalities, family life, church, and community are most intriguing. The exhilarating action and subplots keep the reader in constant anticipation. It is almost impossible to put the book down until completion. Dr. Don P. Brandon, Retired Professor, Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana

With the removal of the Indians in 1814 by Andrew Jackson and his men, settlers began to migrate to the fertile Cahawba land that later became Bibb County, Alabama, even before the Federal survey of the land was completed. By 1818, the area had 1280 residents and two years later, the population was 3876. Usually members of a family such as sons and fathers, preceded the rest of the family by a year or more. They cleared land and built crude cabins for their families and sometimes they even planted the first crop. Then the settlers returned to their homeland to transport their families. Many times, close neighbors in the homeland traveled together and when they arrived in Alabama, they located their farms close to each other and small settlements developed in Cahawba. Small communities were generally farm clearings and were often named according to the location near a river, creek or the name of the family who predominated in the area. Churches and schools appeared early in 1817. By 1830, Bibb County's population reached 6306 with lawyers, physicians, tradesman, architects, contractors, blacksmiths, wagon builders, millers, flatboat captains, peddlers, surveyors, ministers and many farmers according to the census. The following biographies in are a few of the many pioneers and families who settled and helped develop Bibb County, Alabama prior to the 1850 census. Biographies in Volume II include: DR.
