Der Philologe und Literaturwissenschaftler Eduar Wechssler (1869 - 1949) im Vorwort zu dem hier vorliegenden Werk: "Der Minnesang, den zuerst die provenzalischen Troubadours, dann nach ihrem Vorbild .Nordfranzosen und Deutsche, Italiener und Portugiesen in ihren Landessprachen vortrugen, war im höchsten Sinne zugleich Ertrag und Träger einer neuen Kultur. Diese höfischen Künstler zeigten den Weg, der von der mittelalterlichen Gebundenheit zu jener Selbstbefreiung des modernen Menschen führte, die zuerst in Italien vollzogen und mit dem Namen Renaissance belegt worden ist. Diese lyrischen Dichter verkündeten in Selbstbekenntnis und Lehre eine auf das Diesseits gerichtete, eudämonistische und vorwiegend ästhetische Weltanschauung. Es ist kein Zufall, dass diese höfische Aufklärung mit der christlichen Reformbewegung der Albigenser und Valdeser auf dem­selben Boden erwuchs. Wie diese befand sie sich in einem scharfen Gegensatz zu der herrschenden Lebenswertung der Kirche. Aber da die geistigen Mächte der Zeit, Kirche, feudaler Staat und Rittertum, die Existenzbedingungen und Bildungsmittel auch dieser neuen Kultur geschaffen hatten, empfingen notwendigerweise jene Vertreter der neuen Menschheitsbildung die Formen ihres Anschauens und Denkens von der älteren Kultur, über die sie selber schon hinauszuwachsen begonnen hatten."
